Great Portland Street station, on its traffic island where the street meets Marylebone Road, was rebuilt in 1930 by the Metropolitan Railway's architect C. W. Clark, with shops, and originally a car showroom, round its edge; it opened in 1863 as Portland Road.

A street rebuilt lease by lease

The street was first rated as John Street in 1726, and its northern end was called Portland Road until the names were joined. It was rebuilt as the Portland estate's 99-year leases ran out, which is why the southern end, towards Oxford Street, is mostly late Victorian and the northern end mostly Edwardian. At the top of the street there are hospitals: the Portland Hospital is at Nos. 205-209, and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital has been on Bolsover Street, one block east, since 1907. The homes are mostly flats above the shops, and on Bolsover Street they are thickest at the northern end.

Who lives at the north end

The Census area between Portland Place and Cleveland Street, from Marylebone Road down to New Cavendish Street (Westminster 013A), had 830 households in 2021, and 93.0% of them lived in a purpose-built block of flats. More than a quarter, 28.6%, rented from the council or a housing association (17.2% from the council itself); 51.0% rented privately and only 19.6% owned.

A flat here may have a freestanding cooker or, above a shop, a built-in single in a small kitchen. Both get the same treatment. Removable parts, the fan cover included, come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity and the door glass are worked by hand in the kitchen, with dust sheets down first.

Parking near Great Portland Street station

Great Portland Street, Bolsover Street, Clipstone Street and Hallam Street are all on Westminster's list of traffic-sensitive streets, so a van stopped to load is watched closely. The paid bays are zone F, controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday, usually with a four-hour limit, and Westminster issues no visitor permits; a tradesperson's alternative is the council's daily trades permit for the zone. Council estates are a separate case. Their parking runs on estate e-permits valid only inside each estate, and the council's street parking pages say they do not apply there, so if your block has its own car park, tell us when you call.
