Great Burstead's conservation area, first designated in April 1983, is a short stretch of Church Street around St Mary Magdalene, near the western edge of the village; Basildon Council added a roadside verge by the Pump House and a field behind 101-109 Church Street in September 2013.
Timber-framed houses on Church Street
Three listed houses stand near the church. Gobions, No. 120, is a timber-framed house of the 16th or 17th century with a cross wing, now mostly faced in brick. Bottle Cottage, Nos. 124-126, is timber-framed and plastered, of the 17th or 18th century, and is now one house with a lean-to at each side. The Old Stores, No. 125, is a 17th-century timber-framed and plastered house with weatherboarding on its west gable; it was the village stores in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the appraisal says its two shop fronts have since been removed. In the 19th century the village around them had two farms, the King's Arms (once the Five Bells), a shop and post office, two wells and a pump.
Old frames, low rooms and later extensions make for kitchens of every shape, which is a general point about houses of this age. The job is the same in all of them: dust sheets first, then the racks, trays and side runners out to be soaked and cleaned separately, while the oven cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
From Kennel Lane to the newer closes
The council's 2011 appraisal of the conservation area traces the growth. The Ordnance Survey map of 1922 shows much the same village as that of 1875, but by 1938 building had started on Church Street, Mill Road, Kennel Lane and Grange Road. After the war the triangle between those roads and South Green filled in, and the last 30 years or so of the 20th century turned most of the village into dense, suburban housing.
The census shows two different places. Around the church and out along Noak Hill Road, 118 of 133 households lived in a detached house in 2021. In the area that takes in Kennel Lane, Coopers Drive, Froden Close and Passingham Avenue, where several postcodes date only from 1990-92, the mix was 64 detached, 49 semi-detached and 22 terraced out of 136.
