St Mary Magdalene is Grade I listed, Norman at its core and largely rebuilt in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and the churchyard holds what is reckoned to be the oldest yew in Essex, roughly 800 years old. Great Burstead sits about a mile and a half south of Billericay, in the civil parish of Great Burstead and South Green in Basildon borough, and it was the main settlement in the area from medieval times until Billericay overtook it in the nineteenth century.
The conservation area around the church
Designated in 1983, the conservation area is a small cluster of weatherboarded cottages and timber-framed, plastered houses gathered by the church, with the newer homes picking up the same Essex weatherboarding. The old cottages have low ceilings and tight kitchens, so the racks, shelves and trays come out and soak in the heated tank in the van and nothing caustic is opened up indoors.
Farmhouses and the estate to the east
Expansion east of the historic core began in the 1920s, with most of the building coming in the late twentieth century, so the stock runs from grand manor homes on acreage down to modest suburban housing. The larger farmhouses often have a two-oven AGA or a range in the kitchen, and an AGA in a Great Burstead farmhouse is a £143 job.

How is an AGA handled?
The shelves and runners lift out into the tank, and the cast cavities are degreased by hand indoors. We heat-test it before we go.
Will the kitchen smell of chemicals?
No. The soaking is done outside, and indoors we use non-caustic products on the cavity, fan cover and glass.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours, signed off once it passes the heat test.
