Grays station opened as Grays Thurrock on 13 August 1854, and the High Street crosses the railway on the level beside it. Road traffic was moved onto a bridge in 1975, leaving a crossing for people on foot. In September 2023 Thurrock Council moved to withdraw its planning application for an underpass to replace that crossing, after the estimated cost climbed by about two-thirds.
Grays Riverside: flats, lets and checkouts
Grays Riverside, the ward that takes in the High Street, is the only ward in Thurrock where flats are the majority. At the 2021 Census, 52.1% of its households lived in a purpose-built block, and 36.1% rented privately, about double the Thurrock figure of 18.3%. Across the whole borough, 63.3% of its 66,377 households owned their home and 17.7% rented from the council or a housing association.
Private lets of that kind end with a checkout, and the clerk will look at the oven door. The door is split where its design allows so the inner faces of the glass get cleaned, and you see the result with the oven lit. Grays parking zones, lettered A to J
Thurrock Council runs lettered permit zones around the town centre, and the hours split into two groups:
- Zones A to F
- Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm. Zone F takes in the High Street south of the railway crossing and Thames Road; part of Seabrooke Rise is in Zone E.
- Zones G, H and J
- Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Parts of Crest Avenue and Manor Way are in G, Church Street in H, Kent Road and Richmond Road in J.
- Badgers Dene permit area
- Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm, on roads such as Adstock Way and Harrap Chase.
A Sunday visit is clear of all of them, and in G, H, J and Badgers Dene so is a Saturday. On a weekday the van needs a legal space. With the High Street crossing closed to cars, it also helps to know which side of the railway you are on.

Each kind of appliance has its own fixed figure in the table, and the one quoted on the phone is the one you pay. A built-in single takes about 90 minutes, a double about two hours and a 90cm range two to three.
Chafford Hundred, East Tilbury and the rest of Thurrock
Chafford Hundred is the newest: the first homes were finished in 1989 on land that was about two-thirds chalk quarry, around 5,600 houses and flats have gone up since, and the station opened in 1993. Homes of that age usually have fitted kitchens with built-in ovens, some of them pyrolytic.
East Tilbury is older. The British Bata Shoe Company built a village for its workers there between 1933 and the mid-1960s, and the first houses, on Bata Avenue, were Czech in style; the parallel avenues hold 104 pairs of flat-roofed semi-detached houses. The council made it a conservation area in 1993. Kitchens in houses of that age are usually compact.
Elsewhere the census shows the spread. Orsett ward was 43.4% detached houses in 2021; Chadwell St Mary, by contrast, was mostly terraces and semis, and in Tilbury Riverside and Thurrock Park 35.9% of households rented from a social landlord. Yes. We work seven days a week and Saturdays cost the same as weekdays. The High Street south of the railway crossing is in Zone F, which runs until 6pm on Saturdays, so tell us the street and we will plan where the van stops.
