The State on George Street opened at half past seven on 5 September 1938, showing The Hurricane. It cost £100,000 to build, twenty houses in George Street came down to make room for it, and F. G. M. Chancellor of Frank Matcham and Co. drew it. Historic England lists it Grade II* and calls it one of the best preserved of the late 1930s super cinemas. It also sits on the Heritage at Risk register, assessed as very bad.

Wetherspoon won approval for a £5m conversion of the State in July 2021 and abandoned it in December 2022. That same month Thurrock Council issued a section 114 notice over an in-year gap of about £470m, and Essex County Council has been exercising the borough's strategic financial functions since. A lot of writing about Grays is about what the town centre is going to be. Our figure is a today figure. The list we quote across Thurrock does not move for an RM17 address, and there is no premium-area surcharge.
The High Street foot crossing still splits the town
Grays station opened on 13 August 1854 and the railway still cuts across the High Street at street level. Road traffic was lifted onto an overbridge in 1975 and what was left became a foot crossing, so it is walkers rather than drivers who wait at the barriers to get from the north side of town down to the river and Grays Beach. An underpass has been drawn up and part funded, £10.8m of Local Growth money from the South East LEP. It is not built. Tell us the road when you book and the van parks where racks, shelves, trays and side runners can come straight out to the heated tank.
