Harmer Street went up in the late 1830s as the first stage of a speculative new town, attributed to the Brighton architect Amon Henry Wilds, that was meant to run from the Royal Terrace Pier up towards Windmill Hill. It was never finished. Its two brick terraces step up the slope in pairs, and most of the buildings are listed.

Windmill Hill grew in the early Victorian years, when Gravesend was a resort for holidaymakers arriving from London by steamboat; it has villas raised above the road and rows of artisans' cottages, and Clarence Place probably has the greatest concentration of fine buildings. Darnley Road is mostly large paired villas of two and three storeys, built between 1840 and 1860.
In Pelham ward, which takes in Pelham Road and Darnley Road, over half the households lived in a flat at the 2021 Census: 40.5% in a purpose-built block and 11.6% in a converted or shared house. Only 6.6% had a detached house. Across Gravesham as a whole, flats of either kind were under a fifth of homes.
A flat cut out of a villa usually has a compact kitchen with a built-in single or a slim cooker, and often a flight of stairs or two between it and the street. Parking in Gravesend's residents' zones
Gravesham's residents' parking scheme has seven zones, lettered A, B, C, D, F, G and H. In most of them the bays are for permit holders only from 6.30pm to 8am, seven days a week. In the daytime the rules vary street by street, for example pay and display or limited free parking, which suits a visit that ends well before the evening controls start.

DA13: Meopham, Vigo and Istead Rise
South of the town the post town keeps going, and the houses get bigger. Vigo was built on the site of a Second World War officer-training camp: Kent County Council bought the land in 1964, sold 65 acres to a company linked to Croudace, and the first resident moved into Timberbank on 15 October 1965. Istead Rise had fewer than 40 houses in 1912; most of it was laid out on larger plots between 1958 and 1974, and at the 2021 Census 91.8% of its households owned their home.
In Meopham South and Vigo ward 48.7% of households had a detached house, and in Shorne, Cobham and Luddesdown 55.9%. Houses that size are more likely to have a range cooker or an AGA than a terrace in town is.
