Grange Park station is there because of a deal: Richard Metherall, a builder who had done well in Muswell Hill, swapped land with the Great Northern and promised to build a number of good-class houses for its commuters, and in return the company built the station, which opened in 1910.
The Chine, Old Park Ridings and The Grangeway
Metherall bought part of the Chase Park estate, west of Bush Hill and north of Green Dragon Lane, after it came on the market in 1908. By the end of 1909 The Chine and Old Park Ridings ran across the Salmons Brook valley and up the far slope; he built two bridges over the brook and straightened its course. A block of ten shops went up on The Grangeway in 1910, and in 1912 Old Park Ridings and Old Park Avenue opened as a through road to Enfield Town, cut 12ft deep through the brow of the hill. The First World War stopped work. The large detached houses at the top of The Chine and Old Park Ridings, built in 1913-14, were the last before it; the middle stretches of both roads were filled in during the 1920s with gabled semis that have two-storey bays. The council made the core of the estate a conservation area on 5 November 2008.
Metherall's early houses are Arts and Crafts in flavour, closely packed on a steep site, and the council's appraisal describes them as houses in single occupation. The appraisal says most change here since the 1930s has been extensions, so a kitchen may well have grown at the back, and some houses of this size will have a 90cm range or a two-oven AGA. The parades on The Grangeway are three storeys, with flats and offices over the shops.
