The Great Eastern Railway opened Grange Hill station on 1 May 1903, on its Fairlop Loop between Woodford and Ilford, and the boundary with the London Borough of Redbridge runs just east of the station building on Manor Road.

Interwar roads and the Limes Farm blocks
The Victoria County History, published in 1956 and covering Chigwell parish, describes Grange Hill as "a housing area of 1920-39", with similar building in Fencepiece Road and some houses put up after 1945. Limes Farm, south-west of the station, is council housing: Epping Forest District Council's Limes Farm project covers blocks on Copperfield and Limes Avenue, and in 2022 the council said it would replace every window and door, balcony doors included, in the estate's red, green and yellow blocks.
The Epping Forest side is Grange Hill ward. At the 2021 Census it had 2,668 households, and the largest group, 31.5%, lived in a purpose-built flat; 25.6% had a semi, 25.2% a detached house and 15.4% a terrace. 63.2% owned their home, 18.1% rented privately and 17.3% rented socially, 12.3% from the council.
