Grahame Park stands on the old Hendon Aerodrome, where Claude Grahame-White laid out a proper airfield in 1911; the first airmail flew from it that September.
Grahame Park's 1970s blocks
Hendon Council began asking the Air Ministry for the land in 1945, to replace homes lost in the war. The government approved the scheme in 1964, and by then Hendon had become part of Barnet, which drew up a plan with the Greater London Council for a new town of 6,550 homes. The original estate had 1,777 council homes, square brick terraced houses and long, low, flat-roofed blocks of flats, under the GLC's chief architect Sir Roger Walters. The first family arrived in October 1971. In the late 1980s the walkways joining the blocks were taken out and pitched roofs added.
In the census area that covers Quakers Course and Long Mead (Barnet 026B), 74.9% of households lived in purpose-built flats at the 2021 Census, and 72.8% of its 655 households rented from the council or a housing association, 55.7% from the council itself.
In a low-rise block the routine is simple. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
Where the rebuilding has got to in 2026
Barnet's regeneration page puts the whole programme at about 4,000 new homes, and in June 2026 it counted 894 built by Notting Hill Genesis, 595 of them affordable. The 2020 outline consent covers 2,088 homes and moved Lanacre Avenue onto a new line, renamed Bristol Avenue. In its summer 2026 update Notting Hill Genesis lists Plot A as finished, 209 affordable homes with a Tesco, and says Phase 2 (Plots K, L, H, G and J, south of the Concourse) has detailed consent; changes to K, L and H, for 553 homes, are due to be submitted this autumn. The north-east corner is separate: in December 2024 Barnet chose Lovell as its joint-venture partner there, run through Barnet Homes, and the council issued an initial demolition notice for Grahame Park North East in July 2025.
The council says the north-east scheme will give existing residents modern homes, so for some households the next move is from an old flat to a new one nearby. Kitchens in new blocks usually come with a built-in single under the counter or at eye level, and some have a pyrolytic oven.

Yes. A single takes about 90 minutes on site, and the oven only needs to be cool when we arrive, so it can be done once the kitchen is packed.
Is there anything to sort out for parking?
Tell us the block and the nearest street when you book. Barnet runs several controlled parking zones around Colindale with different hours, so the signs on the day decide where the van stops.
