Goldhawk Road follows one arm of an old Roman road that forked at Shepherd's Bush: one branch went on to Uxbridge, and this one ran west before turning south at Stamford Green to meet King Street. It takes its name from John Goldhawk, who held land in Fulham in the late 14th century.
W12 on one side, W6 on the other
West of Goldhawk Road station the postcode changes across the road: the north side is W12, mostly in Coningham ward, and the south side W6, in Grove ward. On both sides many of the Victorian houses have been cut into flats. At the 2021 Census, 40.9% of Coningham ward's 4,803 households lived in part of a converted house, and 37.0% did in Grove; in Coningham 36.1% rented privately. On the north side, the far west end towards Stamford Brook is in Wendell Park ward.
Shops with flats above, from the viaduct to Cathnor Road
Between the viaduct and Cathnor Road the north side lies in the Coningham and Lime Grove conservation area, and the council describes the frontage as mostly 19th-century, three storeys high and built of stock brick, with shops below. The Goldhawk pub building dates from about 1860 and the Swakeley Arms, on the corner of Coningham Road, from about 1865. No. 54, near the viaduct, was built around 1870 as a detached house of three storeys and a semi-basement. Back at the Green end, Bamborough Gardens is a short street of three-storey Victorian terraces just off the road.
A flat above a shop like these is usually reached by its own door and a stair. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand in the kitchen.
Queen Charlotte's and Oakbrook, at the W6 end
From 1940 until October 2000 Queen Charlotte's maternity hospital stood at 339 to 351 Goldhawk Road, before it moved to Du Cane Road next to Hammersmith Hospital. Its administration block was Oakbrook, a stuccoed Neo-Gothic house built in 1878 for a Mrs Brandon and listed Grade II; it is now flats. The Victorian and Edwardian streets of Starch Green lie just north of this stretch.

Goldhawk Road changes parking zone as it runs west
Goldhawk Road crosses several of Hammersmith and Fulham's zones. By the Green and the market it is zone G, controlled every day of the week. Further west the side streets fall in zones J, K, V, L and I, which the council lists as Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm; the Richford Street part of K is controlled every day, 9am to 8pm. Outside the listed hours parking is free, so at weekends the bays in J, V, L and I cost nothing. Tell us the nearest side street when you book and we plan where the van goes.
