No. 39 Harrington Gardens, a few minutes south of the station, was built in 1882 and 1883 for the dramatist W. S. Gilbert.
The gabled houses of Ernest George and Peto
Gilbert's house is one of 29 that the architects Ernest George and Peto designed on Harrington Gardens and Collingham Gardens between 1880 and 1888, modelled on the Flemish and German street fronts of old northern European towns, in red brick and terracotta with big gables. The Survey of London calls them the extreme point of late-Victorian individualism in the London house. The Harrington Gardens houses were all occupied by the end of 1884. Collingham Gardens sold badly: No. 1, built in 1884, was apparently not lived in for good until 1890, and the builders, Peto Brothers, gave up building in 1891. By then, the Survey notes, flats were the coming thing.
Several of these houses have since been divided; Nos. 24 and 26 Harrington Gardens, for one, became flats in 1978 and 1979. A flat cut from a house this size can have its kitchen on any floor, so tell us which when you book. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets.
Courtfield Gardens: flats since 1913
On the Gunter estate south-west of the station, conversion to flats was already under way in 1913, when William Radford made flats in four houses at Nos. 68 to 70 Courtfield Gardens; two of them had never been properly occupied since they were built. In 1922 two houses in Gledhow Gardens were made into flats for single ladies, and in 1925 the architect Gertrude Leverkus drew up a scheme to convert No. 31 next door for Women's Pioneer Housing, as flats for fifteen "women workers". Mews stables went the same way, Gaspar Mews among them, turned into small cottages around 1915.
In the census area around the station and Ashburn Place (Kensington and Chelsea 016C), the 2021 Census counted 646 households: 55.3% rented privately, 40.2% owned and 4.0% rented from the council or a housing association. 53.0% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 20.5% in part of a converted or shared house.

Parking off Cromwell Road
Cromwell Road is the A4, and a 2000 order designates short stretches of Ashburn Place, Courtfield Gardens and Gloucester Road at their junctions with it as GLA side roads, which Transport for London manages. A visiting van needs a space in a side street. On Kensington and Chelsea's single yellow line map, Ashburn Place, Courtfield Road, Harrington Gardens and the streets south to Old Brompton Road are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and until 1.30pm on Saturdays; Earl's Court, to the west, keeps Saturday controls until 6.30pm. The map's information dates from April 2020, so the street sign decides. During controlled hours visitors use a pay-by-phone bay.

Is a Saturday afternoon visit easier for parking?
Round Harrington Gardens and Ashburn Place, yes: on the council's map the single yellow lines are controlled only until 1.30pm on Saturdays. Check the plate on your street. Weekends cost the same as weekdays.
Can you clean a range cooker in a big house kitchen?
