Globe Town dates from a land sale in 1790, when Charles Digby sold most of the Eastfields estate. One of the buyers, Martin Wilson, an Aldgate brewer, paid for the building, which began either side of Green Street; by 1806 the area was already called Globe Town.
From weavers' cottages to the Cranbrook towers
The first houses were small. There were about 90 dwellings by 1800, many of them cottages, and houses already stood in Bonner Street and Pleasant Row; building spread east over the next decade. Green Street itself is the western end of today's Roman Road; the name Roman Road was carried west from Bow only in modern times.
By 1959 the Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green had cleared 14 acres between Old Ford Road and Roman Road, east of Bonner Street, for its most ambitious estate. The Cranbrook estate, designed by Francis Skinner, Douglas Bailey and Berthold Lubetkin, was officially opened in 1964 with about 530 dwellings, laid out on a figure-of-eight street called Mace Street, and it won a Civic Trust award. Its six towers are named after twin towns, Puteaux and Offenbach among them. In the garden of Tate House stands Elisabeth Frink's bronze Blind Beggar and his Dog (1958), listed Grade II* in 1998.
Who lives around Mace Street
The 2021 Census area covering part of the Cranbrook estate, around Mace Street, had 623 households. 91.0% of them lived in a purpose-built block of flats, and 44.9% rented from the council, roughly twice the share renting privately (21.5%). Another 24.6% owned their flat.
A kitchen in a 1960s council flat was probably planned around a freestanding cooker, and a later refit may have swapped it for a built-in single under the hob. Either works the same way. Racks, shelves and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are worked by hand in the kitchen. Parking near the Cranbrook estate
The public streets of Globe Town fall in zone A4 on the council's parking map, controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm. Parking inside a council estate is a separate matter: the council says estates and other private land have restrictions of their own. Weekend visits cost the weekday price, which helps if a weekday bay near the block is hard to find.

Yes. The towers are 11, 13 and 15 storeys. The removable parts come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the rest is done by hand in the kitchen; tell us the block and floor when you book.
Is Globe Town the same place as Bethnal Green?
Globe Town grew up as a district of Bethnal Green, on its eastern side. Its streets, Cranbrook included, are in Bethnal Green East ward today. Paradise Row, by the station, is in Bethnal Green West, and the Bethnal Green page covers the streets around the station and the gardens.
