Between July 1910 and June 1911, 159 houses and cottages went up on what was left of the Gidea Hall estate for the Romford Garden Suburb exhibition. Sir Herbert Raphael, who had bought the hall in 1897, formed the company behind it with two fellow Liberal MPs, and more than a hundred architects sent in designs, Barry Parker, Raymond Unwin and Baillie Scott among them.

The brief asked each architect for a three or four bedroom house. Havering's conservation area appraisal, finalised in 2025, finds mostly semi-detached and detached houses, the larger ones north of Main Road, in red brick or render under clay tiles. A second "modern homes" exhibition in 1934 was meant to sell plots south of Eastern Avenue and produced 35 houses, among them the flat-roofed 64 Heath Drive by Francis Skinner of Tecton. The area became a conservation area in June 1970 and was stretched south to take in Gidea Park station in 1989. Thirteen buildings in it are listed, including 16 and 27 Meadway, 36 and 38 Reed Pond Walk and 41 and 43 Heath Drive.
A family house of that age may well have had its kitchen extended at the back, and a bigger kitchen is where a double oven or a 90cm range can go. Listed or not, the oven is cleaned the same way.
