At the 1881 census the parish of Fulham had 7,351 houses. By 1901 it had 19,666, and its population had grown from 42,900 to 137,289 in the same twenty years.
Fulham's building boom, 1881 to 1901
The parish became the Metropolitan Borough of Fulham in 1900. It was merged with Hammersmith in 1965, which is why Fulham's council is Hammersmith and Fulham. The 1901 figures come to almost seven people for every house in the parish.

One postcode, very different kitchens
A floor of a converted terrace usually has a small kitchen with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker. A whole house that has been extended at the back may have room for a 90cm range, and a newer block flat usually has an integrated oven set into a run of units. Each takes a different amount of time, and the method is the same for all of them. Dust sheets go down first. The price is set by the appliance: a single, a double, a wide single, a 90cm range or an AGA each has one figure, and the one agreed on the phone before the visit is the one you pay.
Parking the van on Fulham streets
Much of Fulham is in one of the council's lettered parking zones, and the hours differ from zone to zone. Zones F and S, round Fulham Broadway and Walham Green, are controlled every day from 8.30am to 10pm. The zones to the south and west, Q, U, W and Z among them, run Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. The council's zone times table lists each one, and parking in each zone is free outside its controlled times.
Loading is allowed for up to 20 minutes in a bay or on a yellow line, only if it is safe and the vehicle is seen to be in continuous use, according to the council's loading rules. An oven clean lasts far longer, so the van needs a bay of its own: pay and display (capped at 2 hours in zone F and 1 hour in zone S) or a visitor session booked by the resident. Some private estate roads are outside the zones altogether, so on an estate ask the building's management where a visiting van can stop; on the street, the signs give the hours.
