Interwar houses off Frognal
No. 20 Frognal Way was built in 1934 for the singer Gracie Fields. Maxwell Fry's Sun House, No. 9, followed in 1935. At 66 Frognal there is a reinforced-concrete house of 1937 by Connell, Ward and Lucas, and Frognal Close, the same year, is six large semi-detached houses by Ernst Freud.
The older layer is late Victorian. Frognal Gardens was laid out around 1889, and James Neale's five houses there were built by Allison and Foskett, a local firm, between 1890 and 1896. Frognal Mansions, a block of flats by Palgrave and Co., went up beside Frognal House in 1897. Further west, plots on Redington Road were offered from 1875 (Philip Webb designed Nos. 2 and 4 in 1876), and 13 houses were built on Templewood Avenue between 1910 and 1912.
Detached houses in Frognal ward
Frognal ward had 3,302 households at the 2021 Census. 7.7% lived in a detached house, against 1.7% across Camden, and a further 9.1% in a semi. In the small Census area that runs from Frognal Mansions out to Templewood Avenue (Camden 004E) the detached share was 16.0%, and 43.1% of households owned their home outright. Flats still make up most of the ward: 41.0% in purpose-built blocks and 35.8% in converted houses.
A detached house is where a double oven in a tall housing, a 90cm range or an AGA is most likely. Frognal oven questions
I live on Redington Road. When is parking easiest?
On most of the road CA-S(a) is controlled only from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, Monday to Friday, so a morning start or a weekend visit avoids it. The Frognal end is in CA-H(c), controlled from 9am to 7pm Monday to Saturday, so there a Sunday is the day without controls. Weekends cost the weekday price.
Is a big house priced differently from a flat?
No. The price follows the oven, so a single in a mansion flat and a single in a detached house cost the same £77.
