The parish was one of several Barnets until 1274, when it was first recorded as Frerenbarnet after its lords, the knights of the Hospital of St John. Their church, St James the Great on the corner of Friern Barnet Lane and Friary Road, goes back to the later 12th century, though only the extensively restored Norman south doorway survived the enlargement of 1853.

The Holly Park estate, 33 acres beside the line with a frontage on Friern Barnet Road, was laid out in 424 plots in 1879, along Beaconsfield, Glenthorne and the roads between. By 1883 it had 198 houses and 900 people, by 1889 Glenthorne Road had 66 houses and Holly Park Road 74, and the estate was virtually complete by 1897. Holly Park drew the first commuters once Colney Hatch station had opened, mostly London clerks in 1904, who lived in small semis or in superior terraces with bay windows, such as the Cyprus and Clydesdale terraces in Glenthorne Road.
By 1975 some of those terraces had been divided into flats. In the Census small area round Holly Park Road and Beaconsfield Road (Barnet 015A), 23.8% of the 547 households in 2021 lived in part of a converted or shared house, 26.5% in a purpose-built block and 23.9% in a whole terraced house. Of all households there, 28.8% rented privately.
A flat made out of a Victorian terrace often has its kitchen in the back addition, with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker, and stairs up from a shared hall. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
The Crescent and the Bethune Park estate
North of Holly Park, the old Frenchman's farm was offered for sale as the Bethune Park Garden estate, 110 acres meant to be the 'prettiest garden suburb to London', with wide plots and controlled building. The Crescent was lined with expensive houses in 1910, when The Ridgeway and Bethune Avenue had been made, but little more was built before 1920; the council later took most of the northern part for allotments and Bethune recreation ground.
