The green itself is a triangle of 0.83 hectares between Fortune Green Road, Ajax Road and Achilles Road, saved from builders by local protest and opened to the public in 1897; Hampstead's local authority paid £3,000 towards the land and the London County Council £3,027.
Parking round the green: three zones with different hours
Camden's own zone data, last updated in September 2025, puts the streets here in three zones. Fortune Green Road and the short roads off it towards Finchley Road (Weech, Burrard and Ingham Roads) are in CA-P(a). The Greek streets beside and west of the green, Agamemnon, Ajax and Ulysses Roads, are in CA-P(c), along with Gondar Gardens, Menelik Road and most of Hillfield Road. Fordwych Road and the side streets off Shoot-Up Hill, Garlinge, St Cuthbert's and Manstone Roads, belong to CA-Q, Kilburn.

None of the three has Saturday or Sunday hours. During controlled hours a tradesperson parks in a resident bay on Camden's trade permit; visitor permits are bought by residents for their own guests. On the CA-P(c) streets the bays are free of controls from noon.
Suttle's Greek streets and the flats that followed
Building came late here. Twenty acres went to Hampstead Cemetery, opened in November 1876, and that held houses back for a decade. Then W. H. Suttle, who lived on Agamemnon Road, was the main builder of the 155 houses on Agamemnon, Ajax, Ulysses and Achilles Roads between 1886 and 1896. Gondar Gardens got 52 houses from 1892 to 1896 and five blocks of flats in 1899. Between 1922 and 1927 another 17 blocks rose along Mill Lane, Aldred Road, Hillfield Road and Fortune Green Road, and in 1954 Frank Scarlett's Templar House estate added 112 flats on Shoot-Up Hill.
Many older houses here have since been split into flats. At the 2021 Census Fortune Green ward had 5,063 households: 41.4% in purpose-built flats, 35.7% in a converted or shared house, and about one in five in a whole house. A flat carved out of a late Victorian house usually has a narrow kitchen with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker, often up a flight of stairs. The method is the same on any floor: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets.

Flats changing hands
