Wates built almost all of Forestdale as a private estate between the late 1960s and the mid 1970s, on former smallholdings out at the Surrey edge, and that history shows in the kitchens. These are owner-occupied family semis, dormer bungalows and short terraces, mostly red brick with timber cladding, arranged along curved closes rather than a grid. People have stayed and reworked their kitchens over decades, so we see more built-in double ovens and the odd 90cm range here than we do on the older council estates nearer Croydon.
One local fact makes our day here easier than most of the borough. Every house was designed with its own driveway and front parking, so the van goes straight onto the drive next to the door. No permit, no controlled zone, no ferrying the tank down a terrace.

- Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand indoors with non-caustic products.

- Before we leave, the oven is switched on and checked, so you know it heats properly and does not only look clean.
Double ovens in the Wates semis
Because so many of these homes have had the kitchen redone at least once since Wates handed them over, the built-in double oven is the job we do most in Forestdale, and a double runs longer than a single because there are two cavities plus the wider grill shelves to soak. Questions from Forestdale customers
Will the kitchen smell of chemicals after?
No. The caustic soaking happens in the tank in the van. Indoors we use non-caustic products by hand, so the oven is ready to use that evening.
There is no station here. Does that change anything?
No. We come by van, and the driveways mean we park right at your door. Buses like the 130 and 353 are the local transport, but they have nothing to do with the job.
Do you clean the extractor hood at the same time?
Yes, if you want it done. The hood is £28 added to the oven visit, filters and canopy degreased by hand.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours. A single is nearer ninety minutes.
