Ladygrove, the patch of woodland at CR0 9LU, is what remains of Lady Grove, a small wood on 19th-century maps of Selsdon. When Wates started its Forestdale estate it set the remaining wood aside as a children's playground, which a Wates subsidiary, Fernwood Estates, presented to the council in 1977.

Most of Forestdale was built between the late 1960s and the mid 1970s on open ground that had been smallholdings. Croydon's character appraisal groups it with Selsdon Vale, between Selsdon Park Road and Court Wood Lane: houses on distinctive curved streets, mostly semi-detached or in small terraces, many of them dormer bungalows, in red brick with timber cladding, with open frontages for parking and small enclosed back gardens. The appraisal adds that Forestdale and Selsdon Vale are harder to navigate than most of the area, with less choice of routes.
There are flats too, round the shops at the junction of Featherbed Lane and Selsdon Park Road. In the census output area by those shops (E00005302), 70.2% of the 131 households lived in a purpose-built flat in 2021, and 39.3% of the 135 households rented privately.

A built-in single, common in flats, takes about 90 minutes and a double about 2 hours. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand indoors.
