Hill House, 64 Honor Oak Road, was built around 1796 and is the only building in the present Forest Hill conservation area that survives from Thomas Milne's map of 1800.
Villas on the hill, and the flats that came later
The London and Croydon Railway opened in 1839, with the Dartmouth Arms pub serving as the station until 1845, and large villas for City workers followed. Lewisham's 2010 appraisal of the conservation area describes the early houses set well back from the road in long, narrow plots, often with a carriage drive shared between a semi-detached pair. In the later 20th century the buildings on the west sides of Honor Oak Road and Devonshire Road were replaced by blocks of flats, and the old Congregational church on Taymount Rise became flats too. The conservation area was designated in 1976 and extended in 1997 and 2010, and now covers 45 hectares, taking in the Grade II* Horniman Museum of 1902 and its gardens.
Forest Hill ward, which takes in these streets, had 6,411 households in 2021. 44.4% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, more than lived in houses of every kind put together (35.4%), and another 17.0% in a converted or shared house. About half, 49.1%, owned their home.
So the kitchen could be in one of the later flat blocks, with a built-in single, a villa floor cut into a flat, or a whole house with room for a range cooker. In each case the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and glass are degreased by hand indoors.

Parking in Forest Hill
Lewisham's zone table has two zones named after streets beside Forest Hill station: N, Davids Road, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and C, Hindsley Place, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm. Forest Hill and Perry Vale were part of a wider council consultation on parking controls that closed on 16 June 2025, and the council says it is still analysing the responses, so check the signs on your street. On the steep roads up towards the Horniman the team needs somewhere to park.

£143 for a two-oven AGA, or £187 for a four-oven one. A two-oven AGA is switched off the night before so it is cool when we arrive.
Do you work on Sundays?
Yes, seven days a week, and weekend visits cost the same as weekdays. Zone N is not controlled at weekends, but zone C is on Saturdays, so check the sign if you are near the station.
