The Victoria County History, written in the 1970s, picked out 98 and 100 Odessa Road, dated 1857, as survivors of the plain cottage type that was common in West Ham between about 1840 and 1860.

Building at Forest Gate began about 1855 on the Gurney and Dames estates, west and north of the station. The county history names a few survivors: Odessa Terrace, Nos. 93 to 103 Odessa Road, dated 1869 and plain Georgian in style; three pairs of semi-detached houses of about 1860 at 122 to 127 Forest Lane, one pair still with porches on traceried iron columns; and No. 91 Dames Road, a large house of about 1840.
The Hamfrith estate, where building started about 1872, took in Godwin and Sebert Roads and ran east to Manor Park Cemetery, which was established in 1874 and, despite the name, lies in this ward. The big house on the estate, Hamfrith House, was rebuilt about 1800 and later called West Ham Hall. Since 9 July 1894 the brick viaduct of the Tottenham and Forest Gate Railway has run beside the houses on Sebert Road. Further north, Cranmer, Latimer and Ridley Roads, which share their names with the Oxford martyrs, run up towards the Flats.
Houses this old were built before fitted kitchens, so the cooker is wherever a later owner put it. In the ward, 13.8% of households live in part of a converted or shared house, where the kitchen may be a narrow galley with a built-in single under the counter.

The council lists it as controlled Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm, which are longer hours than the 9am to 5pm of the Forest Gate zone south of the railway. Sebert Road, Godwin Road, Cranmer Road, Dames Road, Odessa Road and Forest Lane are all inside it. On those six days the team needs somewhere to park; Sunday is outside the zone's hours, and a Sunday visit costs the same as a weekday one.
