Foots Cray takes its name from Godwin Fot, a Saxon landowner listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, and from the River Cray. The place is centred on the junction where Foots Cray High Street, Sidcup Hill, Rectory Lane and Cray Road meet. All Saints Church there was built in the 1330s and keeps a Norman font from the late 12th century.
The mansion's footprint is under the houses
Foots Cray Place went up around 1754 for Bourchier Cleeve, a Palladian design attributed to Isaac Ware and modelled on Palladio's Villa Rotonda. It caught fire on 18 October 1949, the cause never established, and a delay in raising the alarm let the fire take hold, so the shell came down in 1950 and its site was built over with housing while the grounds passed to the public as Foots Cray Meadows, 97 hectares of parkland now run as a Local Nature Reserve. Faint outlines of the foundations survive west of the Meadows, near the path in from the Rectory Lane car park. Capability Brown designed the Five Arch Bridge there around 1780.
The district lost its own name in 1921
Foots Cray once had the upper hand over Sidcup, then its industries fell away after the First World War and the urban district was renamed Sidcup Urban District in 1921. Kolster-Brandes made electronics here, later ITT, and the rugby club it left behind still plays as Foots Cray RUFC. Coca-Cola has bottled here since 1961. Housing raised on the old estate ground from the 1950s onward tends to run to a fitted kitchen with a single oven under the counter, which is the £77 job, and the hob beside it in a Rectory Lane kitchen is £23–28.

Do you come out as far as DA14?
Yes, seven days a week. The nearest stations are Sidcup and St Mary Cray, but the tank has to travel by road regardless.
What happens to the racks and runners?
They lift out, go to the van and soak in heated solution while the cavity is being done by hand, then they go back in before the oven is tested.
What does a microwave add?
£22 on the same visit. An extractor hood is £28.
How long am I without the oven?
Around ninety minutes for a single, near enough two hours for a double, and it is heat-tested before we leave so it is ready to use straight away.
