Fitzrovia has no official boundaries, and two councils run it. Fitzroy Square and Goodge Place are in Camden; Great Titchfield Street, Riding House Street and the old Middlesex Hospital site are in Westminster; Charlotte Street is split between them. The line was redrawn in places in 1900, when part of Charlotte Street and the eastern half of Rathbone Street passed to Marylebone.
New flats on the old Middlesex Hospital site
The Middlesex Hospital closed in 2005 and had been demolished by late 2008. Its site became Fitzroy Place, completed in 2016: 289 homes and offices round a new garden square, described as the first in W1 for a century, which includes the hospital's Grade II* chapel. In the 2021 Census output area that covers the square, 94.0% of the 134 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 57.8% rented privately and 8.1% were in shared ownership.
A few steps west, Candover Street has a group of Art Nouveau tenement flats from around 1903, Tower House among them, and on its corner with Riding House Street are offices built that year for the stove makers J T Boulting, decorated with mosaic panels advertising the firm. Westminster covers these streets in its East Marylebone conservation area.
New blocks like Fitzroy Place have fitted kitchens, usually with integrated ovens set into a run of units or a tall housing. The work is the same as anywhere: racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand on dust sheets.
The Camden side, from Charlotte Street to Fitzroy Square
Robert Adam designed the east and south sides of Fitzroy Square; building began in 1794 and they were finished in Portland stone in 1798. The north and west sides followed in stucco, in 1827-29 and 1832-35, and the square was largely pedestrianised in the 1970s, with vehicle access restricted further in a 2008 upgrade, which can mean parking on a nearby street rather than on the square.
The Census area the House of Commons Library calls Fitzrovia East and Bloomsbury West had 2,106 households in 2021. Of those, 74.7% lived in purpose-built flats and 11.8% in a converted or shared house, the kind of upper-floor flat in an older house that often means stairs and no lift; 50.5% rented privately and 24.3% rented from the council or a housing association. The area lost much of its housing to other uses in the 1960s, and the first Fitzrovia Festival, in 1973, had the theme "The people live here!"

Camden's trade permit is for anyone carrying out work or services at a Camden address, for 1 to 40 days, and allows parking in resident permit bays and on single yellow lines in the zone of that address, but not in paid-for bays. Its visitor permits are a separate product for a resident's visitors. A single oven takes about 90 minutes and a double about 2 hours. If you live on the edge of Goodge Street and are not sure which council you are in, the street name is enough for us to check.

I live in Camden. Does the van need a permit?
In a Camden permit bay it does. Camden's trade permit covers a tradesperson or service provider working at a Camden address and is tied to the zone of that address; Camden's visitor permits, which residents buy for visitors to their home, are a different product.
Can you come on a Sunday?
Yes, at the weekday price. Sunday is outside the controlled hours in both zones (Westminster's zone F paid bays and single yellow lines, Camden's CA-E), which makes the parking easier on both sides.
My flat is the top floor of an old house with no lift. Does that matter?
Stairs add a little time to the visit. Tell us the floor when you call.
