Fish Island is called that because the Gas Light and Coke Company laid out a factory town here in the 1860s and named the roads after freshwater fish. Dace Road, Bream Street, Roach Road. Locals called it the Island and the name stayed, even though it is not one; the A12 is on one side and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on the other.
There is almost no old housing stock here to clean
By the late 1800s this was London's largest waterside industrial area, turning out printing ink, rubber and dry-cleaning supplies, which means Fish Island never had the Victorian terraces that fill the rest of E3. Artists started converting the warehouses in the 1990s and the residential building came later. So the ovens fall into two groups and almost nothing else sits in between.

- Fish Island Village, the Peabody and Hill scheme of 588 mixed-tenure homes off Monier Road, where people have been moving in since 2018. Integrated singles, filter hoods, tight galleys.
The canal decides the route in
Fish Island is one of the 58 conservation areas in Tower Hamlets and has no listed buildings in it, which is a fair summary of the place: worth keeping, never grand. The old industrial streets are narrow, several end at the water, and a van that has come in off Wick Lane cannot simply loop round to the next road, so the racks come out and get carried the last stretch on foot. That is the job. It does not change what you pay.

Do you clean ovens in warehouse live-work units?
Yes. The oven is usually a standard domestic single, so it is a £77 job and takes about ninety minutes, and if there is a hood over it that has never been touched, that is £28 more.
Is anything caustic used inside the flat?
No. The caustic side of the work happens in the heated tank in the van, where the racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak. Indoors it is non-caustic products on the cavity, fan cover and door glass, done by hand.
Can you get an appointment at the weekend?
We work seven days. Sundays go early in the summer.
What happens at the end of the job?
The oven is put back together, heat-tested and signed off in front of you.
