Fish Island is named after three of its roads, Dace, Bream and Roach, laid out as a factory town after the Gas Light and Coke Company took over about 30 acres of Old Ford marsh in 1876.
A factory town that lost its houses
The company granted building leases for terraced houses, factories and a school, and people living there called it the Island. Tower Hamlets' appraisal of the Fish Island conservation area, designated in October 2008, tells what happened next. Bombs badly damaged Monier Road and Beachy Road in the Second World War. Afterwards the houses between the railway and the Hertford Union Canal were cleared and rebuilt as industry within two decades, and the area became an industrial quarter with almost no homes at all.
What survived is industrial. The Wick Lane Rubber Works, on Dace Road and Smeed Road, has fourteen buildings of 1882 to 1889 and is described as London's only surviving purpose-built, steam-powered rubber works of its time. By 2009 Dace Road also had creative studios in the Britannia Works and Bridget Riley Studios, there was a smoked salmon factory on Stour Road, and Crown Wharf, below Old Ford Locks, had been rebuilt with live/work units over ground-floor commercial space.
A live/work unit or a flat above a studio often has an open-plan kitchen. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand, on dust sheets, with the door split where it comes apart.
Fish Island Village and the canal-side flats
Fish Island Village, by Peabody and the Hill Group on the Hertford Union Canal, has 588 homes on a 2.23-hectare site, a quarter of them affordable, with residents moving in from 2018. Haworth Tompkins designed the Neptune Wharf part, 501 of the homes in 17 blocks, in brick and precast concrete.
In the ONS census area around Monier Road (Tower Hamlets 001F), 98.0% of the households in 2021 (about 590) lived in purpose-built flats. Ownership was far above the borough figure of 23.1%: 57.8% owned outright or with a mortgage and another 14.6% were shared owners, while 11.0% rented privately.

Parking in zone B4
Fish Island has its own controlled parking zone, B4, which began as an experimental order in January 2016. The council's 2016 road list for it includes Dace, Roach, Monier, Smeed, Stour and Wyke roads, Bream Street, White Post Lane, Wick Lane and Wallis Road south of the railway. The council's zone page gives B4 as controlled from 8.30am to 7.30pm, Monday to Saturday, which is longer than the 5.30pm finish in the other Bow zones.

- A Sunday when the London Stadium has an event. B4 is then controlled from 8.30am to 7.30pm as well, and the council posts the dates on the signs at each entry to the zone.
An ordinary Sunday is the one day of the week without controls in B4, and a Sunday visit costs the same as a weekday one. The council says its zone restrictions apply only to public roads and that private land has its own, so tell us the building when you book.
Questions from Fish Island
Is Fish Island in Hackney?
No. Fish Island is in Tower Hamlets. The railway north of it is the borough boundary, and the streets beyond it, such as Eastway and the northern part of Wallis Road, are in Hackney Wick.
My flat is above a workspace. Is the clean any different?
No. The oven is cleaned the same way: the cavity and door glass by hand in the kitchen, and the removable parts come out and are soaked and cleaned separately.
How long should I allow?
About 90 minutes for a single oven and about two hours for a double. The oven needs to be cool when we arrive.
