In 1855 the Ecclesiastical Commissioners took possession of 156 acres of undeveloped land bounded by Seven Sisters Road, Blackstock Road and Green Lanes. Builders then covered it with the streets of Brownswood Park, which is the Hackney side of Finsbury Park today.
Three councils around one park
Finsbury Park the neighbourhood is split three ways. The park, opened in 1869, has belonged to Haringey Council since 1986, and the streets to its west, in Stroud Green, are Haringey too. The station and most of the streets west of Blackstock Road are in Islington. East of the northern end of Blackstock Road, the streets of Brownswood ward are Hackney's. The price of an oven clean is the same on every side; what changes is the parking.
Brownswood Park's four-storey terraces
John Brookes Porter built the first houses on the estate from 1862 and advertised four-storey terraces in Queen's Road and King's Road, now Queen's Drive and Kings Crescent. The houses on Green Lanes and Seven Sisters Road were larger still. By 1894 Brownswood Park had 1,077 houses and 7,359 people. Sixty years later the district had declined, and in 1954 most of its houses held four or five families.
Many of those houses are flats today. At the 2021 Census, 1,637 of Brownswood ward's 4,105 households lived in part of a converted or shared house. A flat on the third floor of a converted Victorian house usually has a compact kitchen with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker. The racks, trays, side runners and fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in your kitchen.
Private renting in Brownswood
In 2021, 39.9% of Brownswood households rented privately, 28.0% rented from the council or a housing association and 29.2% owned their home. A private tenancy usually ends with an inventory check that includes the oven. Letting agents can have the invoice addressed to the agency, ask for photos for the checkout file and arrange a key pick-up for an empty flat.

The price depends on the appliance, a single, a double, a range or an AGA, and is fixed on the phone before anyone comes out.
Parking zones on each side of the park
Hackney's zone list shows two zones here. Zone G2 (Finsbury Park), which covers the Hackney side of Blackstock Road and most of Somerfield Road, is controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday. Queen's Drive is in zone G, controlled on weekdays only, and Brownswood Road is split between the two, so check the sign on the bay. Both zones run longer on Emirates Stadium event days, which matters this close to Arsenal.
On the Haringey side, Haringey's Finsbury Park zone runs from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, extended to 8.30pm on Emirates match days and on days with a large event in the park; on those event days Sundays are controlled from noon to 4.30pm. Islington sets its own hours around the station, so check the sign on the bay there.

Which council am I in?
Brownswood Road, Queen's Drive and the east side of the northern end of Blackstock Road are Hackney. The station and most of the streets west of Blackstock Road are Islington, and the park and the streets to its west, in Stroud Green, are Haringey. There is a concert in the park on the day I want. Can you still come?
Yes. Haringey's Finsbury Park zone runs longer on large park event days, and Haringey publishes the event dates. We work seven days a week, so tell us the date when you book and check the sign on the bay.
My flat is the top floor of a converted house. Does it cost more?
No. The price is set by the oven. Mention the floor when you call.
Can I book a Saturday?
Yes, at the weekday price. Saturday is a controlled day in Hackney's zone G2 and Haringey's Finsbury Park zone, so the van will need a bay there; in zone G on Queen's Drive, Saturday is uncontrolled unless there is an event at the Emirates.
