Finchley Road was authorised by an Act of 1826 and opened to traffic in 1830, but this stretch was bordered by farmland until the Tube reached Golders Green in 1907. Only its east side, from Temple Fortune Lane up to the North Circular at Henlys Corner, lies in the Hampstead Garden Suburb conservation area.
The 1930s flats on the Suburb side of Finchley Road
The 2010 character appraisal for this stretch lists the blocks built between 1933 and 1938, north of the Temple Fortune gateway. Belmont Court (A. B. Mitchell, 1933) is a three-storey courtyard of flats with shops in its two wings. Clarendon, Dudley and Montrose Courts (Godard and Smith, 1934) have their central block set back behind a carriage drive. The Pantiles (J. B. F. Cowper, 1935) is listed Grade II and is reached from the pavement by a flight of steps; the appraisal says it was planned as labour-saving flats with fitted kitchens for commuters. Birnbeck Court, housing association flats for older people, stands where the 3,000-seat Orpheum cinema opened in 1930.
A kitchen fitted ninety years ago has usually been refitted since, and a flat of that age now tends to have a single oven built in under the worktop or a slim freestanding cooker. The floor makes no difference to the method. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat, on dust sheets.
Cottages and maisonettes on Erskine Hill and Addison Way
The streets behind the parade are the Artisans' Quarter, the first part of Hampstead Garden Suburb to be built, mostly between 1909 and 1912. Addison Way runs from Finchley Road to Falloden Way in red brick: maisonettes on the north side, two-storey cottages on the south, nearly all by Parker and Unwin, with Oakwood Court added in 1953. Erskine Hill climbs from it towards Central Square, past C. M. Crickmer's semis and terraces of 1910 and 1911 and the Barnett Homestead, twelve small flats built in 1916 for war widows.
At the 2021 Census, 41.9% of households in the small census area around Erskine Hill (Barnet 035B) lived in a terraced house, 31.9% in a semi and 16.8% in a purpose-built flat. Nearly half, 45.5%, owned their home outright. A cottage kitchen of this size usually holds a freestanding cooker or one built-in single, and the appraisal notes that Addison Way has no hard standings for cars, so the van stops in the road.

Parking for the van between Temple Fortune and Henlys Corner
North of Willifield Way the road widens to four lanes as it falls towards the North Circular, so the van needs a side street or a marked bay. A Barnet permit notice of May 2026 names a Temple Fortune zone (TF) but gives no hours, and times differ from zone to zone, so read the signs on your street and mention them when you call.
