Finchley Road and Frognal station opened in 1860 as Finchley Road St Johns Wood, on the Hampstead Junction Railway, and is now on the Overground's Mildmay line. The road above it is older: Finchley Road was cut through the manor's demesne farmland, held by the Maryon Wilsons, between 1826 and 1835.
Victorian houses round Langland Gardens
Fourteen houses went up in Lindfield Gardens in 1884 and 1890 to 1892. The builders E. H. and H. T. Cave then put up most of the 38 houses, blocks of flats and 16 shops built on Finchley Road between 1893 and 1897, and probably the 17 houses and some flats in Langland Gardens from 1895 to 1897; Cecil Beaton was born at No. 21. Frognal Court, at No. 160 Finchley Road, followed in 1934.
Most of those houses are now flats. In the Census area that covers Langland and Lindfield Gardens (Camden 004C), 57.4% of households lived in part of a converted or shared house in 2021, and 46.3% of its 579 households rented privately. A kitchen in a divided Victorian house is often a narrow one at the top of a stair. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the flat, after dust sheets go down.
Lithos Road, Dresden Close and the O2 site
In 1963 a developer and Hampstead council announced plans for 50 acres between Finchley Road, Lymington Road, West End Lane and Broadhurst Gardens, with private and council flats for 6,000 people. In the late 1970s Norfolk Mansions was built on Lithos Road, and an estate of red-brick terraces on new roads, Dresden Close and Wedgwood Walk, south of Lymington Road; the old Finchley Road frontage was still standing in 1987. That small Census area (Camden 010D) is three-quarters purpose-built flats (75.4%), and 48.1% of its 961 households rented from a social landlord in 2021.
The next change is the O2 Centre. In August 2026 Camden approved Landsec's revised plan for the 14-acre site: up to 1,800 homes, with 651 in phase one, where some blocks rise to around 17 storeys. The scheme is expected to take 10 to 15 years in three phases, and the shopping centre is demolished in the last of them. New flats on that scale come with built-in ovens, usually a single, sometimes a double.

Parking zones round the station
Camden's zone data puts Lithos Road in CA-R(b), Swiss Cottage, controlled from 8.30am to 10pm Monday to Saturday. Langland and Lindfield Gardens are in CA-H(c), Frognal, until 7pm on the same days. Dresden Close and Wedgwood Walk are in CA-P(b), West End, 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday. Finchley Road itself passes through more than one zone near the station, so the zone depends on the address. None of these zones has Sunday hours. Visitor permits are for residents' guests, and Camden's trade permit is the route for a tradesperson's van.
