Finchley Central station opened on 22 August 1867 as Finchley and Hendon, became Finchley (Church End) in 1894 and took its present name on 1 April 1940; the first Northern line electric trains reached it on 14 April that year, on their way to High Barnet.
Ballards Lane, from villas to flats over the shops
Ballards Lane is older than the railway, and several of its big houses gave way to flats and shops between the wars. The Victoria County History lists the changes: Willow Lodge was pulled down in 1929; Maple House and Elm House made way for the flats of Finchley Court in 1935; Court House, on the northern corner of Nether Street, became flats in 1937; and Bay Tree Cottage, already hemmed in by shops, was replaced by Woolworth's in 1938. By 1977 the same history described the road as Victorian and Edwardian houses, modern flats, used-car depots, chapels and foreign restaurants.
Flats and conversions are common along it. In the small census area north of the station round 183 Ballards Lane (Barnet 023D), 33.7% of households lived in a purpose-built flat at the 2021 Census, 24.4% in part of a converted or shared house and 7.3% in a commercial building, a category that includes flats over shops. 50.7% rented privately. A flat over a parade often has a narrow stair and a small kitchen with a built-in single.
Wentworth Park, Essex Park and Lichfield Grove
The Conservative Land Society offered building lots on the Wentworth estate beside Ballards Lane in 1868, the year after the station opened, and Lichfield Grove went up near the station in 1869. Essex Park and Wentworth Park, west of Ballards Lane, followed in 1934. A house of that date usually had a modest kitchen, and if it has been knocked through or extended since, a double oven is a common choice for the bigger room.
