Ballards Lane is an old road, probably named for the Ballard family and traceable to around 1300, and the houses along and behind it went up in a rush: Cyprus and Bibsworth roads existed by 1897, development had reached the College farm farmhouse by 1920, Essex Park and Wentworth Park were built west of Ballards Lane in 1934, and by the end of that decade most of the farmland in the parish had been taken for housing.

A 1930s semi in Essex Park or Wentworth Park was built with a small rear kitchen, and most have been knocked through or extended since, which is why doubles at £110 turn up more often here than the plan of the original house would suggest. Flats above the Edwardian parades and in the mansion blocks run to a built-under single at £77 with a four-ring hob over it. Adding the hob in a Wentworth Park semi is £23–28 on top, and a gas hob with cast-iron pan supports takes longer than a ceramic one.
The station is older than the line it sits on
Finchley Central opened on 22 August 1867 as a Great Northern Railway stop called Finchley and Hendon, became Finchley (Church End) in 1894, and only took its present name in 1940 when the electric trains arrived; steam did not finish here until March 1941. It now junctions the High Barnet branch and the single-track branch to Mill Hill East, and it stands where Ballards Lane, Regents Park Road and Nether Street meet. That junction is where the traffic is. The tank and the water travel in the van, the cavity and door glass are hand-degreased indoors with non-caustic products, and there is no call-out fee on an N3 address.
