Four years in London, then back to Surrey
The old civil parish was abolished on 1 April 1965, and Farleigh sat in the London Borough of Croydon until 1969 before returning to Surrey, where it now makes up the northern part of the Chelsham and Farleigh civil parish in the Tandridge district. Both villages sit on the North Downs, 4.5 miles south-east of Croydon, inside the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and inside the Green Belt, which is why somewhere this close to Croydon still has farmland between its houses.
St Mary's has stood since about 1080
The church is Grade I listed and mostly Norman, put up by Robert De Watville around 1080 and largely unaltered since, which makes it one of the earliest churches in Surrey still in use. It is a small building: a rectangular nave and chancel with a shingled west tower, the chancel extended in the 13th century and a timber west porch added in the 18th. Inside there is a memorial brass to John Brock, a London merchant who died in 1495, shown with his wife and five children. It stands at the end of a rural lane on Farleigh Court Road, opposite Farleigh Court manor house. The Domesday manor of Ferlega was held by a Robert de Wateville too.
A civil parish of 356 people
Chelsham and Farleigh together came to 356 residents at the 2001 census, and the old Farleigh parish on its own counted just 80 people in 1951. The postal town on a Farleigh address is Warlingham, so satnavs tend to aim there first. Give us the lane and the house name when you call. Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
