The lower two thirds of the castle's enclosure wall are thought to date to 1088, some of the earliest Norman stonework defence in the country, and the place has neither keep nor motte. The bridge at the ford is 1596. St Martin's is eleventh-century flint, put up at William of Eynsford's expense, and the village around the pair of them held 1,814 people at the 2011 census.
The High Street was built up to the pavement
Sevenoaks District's appraisal of the conservation area puts it plainly: Eynsford has fewer front gardens than most villages in the district, and the ones there are sit mainly on Station Road and Lullingstone Lane. Along the High Street the houses run in terraces and pairs, two storeys, tall brick chimneys, a good many built straight up to the kerb. So there is often no drive to put a van on. Say so when you book and the parking gets sorted first.
The newer roads sit east, outside the conservation area
Growth followed the railway in 1862 and picked up again after the Second World War, when houses went up east of the High Street along St Martin's Drive, Pollyhaugh and Saddler's Park, while the semi-detached row on the north side of Bower Lane came earlier, in the first part of the twentieth century. Those roads are where fitted kitchens and integrated appliances live rather than fifteenth-century timber frames, so a fitted oven on Pollyhaugh is the everyday job. The listed end of the village pays the same.

Where does the van go if I have no drive?
Somewhere legal and close. The tank rides in it, so the racks, shelves, trays and side runners only have to get to the van and back.
Will the house smell of chemicals afterwards?
It should not. The soaking happens outside, and indoors the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products.
My cottage is listed and the kitchen is tight. Is that a problem?
No. We work at the appliance, and nothing gets drilled or moved to do it.
Do you heat-test before leaving?
Every time. The oven is signed off before we drive off.
