German and Italian prisoners of war put up 189 Uni-Seco prefab bungalows here between 1945 and 1946, on parkland, and the roads they laid out were named after Arthurian knights: Baudwin, Pelinore, Mordred, Ector, Wentland, Meliot and Persant. Six of the prefabs on Persant Road were given Grade II listing in 2009, which is why they are still standing. Historic England had recommended twenty-one. The department signed off on six, because most of the rest had been altered too much to qualify.
What is left and what replaced it
Everything outside that listed handful is going, in four phases, under a scheme run by Lewisham with London and Quadrant and planning permission for 362 new homes, 166 of them at social or affordable rent. Phase 3 finished in February 2025. Phase 4 has not moved, and a London Councils report in November 2025 recorded the scheme as stalled, with roughly 100 homes across the later phases still earmarked for demolition. So the estate is two things at once right now.
What that means for the cooker in your kitchen
The surviving prefabs are single-storey two-bedroom bungalows with a small original kitchen footprint, and eighty years on the appliance sitting in that space is whatever the household put there, usually freestanding and usually one oven. That is a single oven clean at £77. The L&Q replacement houses are the other pattern: integrated ovens behind a cabinet door, some of them stacked pairs at £110. Same method either way. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to the heated tank in the van, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with nothing caustic.

Is a listed prefab a problem to work in?
No. The listing covers the building. We are cleaning an appliance, we bring our own water and tank, and nothing about the job touches the fabric of the house.
Do you charge extra for a small kitchen?
No. Prices are set by the appliance, not the room, and they are quoted on the phone. There is no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
Can you do the hob and the hood at the same visit?
Yes. Hob is £23–28 depending on type, extractor hood £28, booked on the same slot as the oven.
How long will you be in the house?
About ninety minutes for a single, near enough two hours for a double, and the oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
