Six prefabs on Persant Road, numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 25 and 39, were listed at Grade II in March 2009 as the least altered of the bungalows that German and Italian prisoners of war put up here in 1945 and 1946.
From 189 prefabs to around 370 new homes
The council puts the original estate at 189 bungalows, built for the housing shortage after the Blitz. They were Uni-Seco prefabs with two bedrooms, and the streets carry names from Arthurian legend: Baudwin, Ector, Meliot, Pelinore and Persant Roads. Early accounts describe a kitchen with a New World gas cooker and an Electrolux fridge.
In June 2010 a residents' ballot came out 56% to 44% in favour of rebuilding, and the scheme was approved in 2011. In February 2025 the council reported phase three delivered: 102 homes, 63 of them for social rent, 18 at London Living Rent and 21 for shared ownership, which brought the total built to 159 of around 370 planned. A London Councils report of November 2025, as quoted by Estate Watch, says the final phase had not been progressed and that the outline planning permission granted had expired.
Old prefab kitchens and new fitted ones
So two kinds of kitchen can sit a street apart. A prefab is about 600 square feet in all, so its kitchen is small. A new home from the rebuild will normally have a built-in oven under a separate hob.

The clean is the same for both. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, after dust sheets go down.

Parking on the Excalibur Estate
No zone on Lewisham's table is named after the estate or its roads, and the table lists no streets, so check the signs on your own road when you book. Controls are spreading in this part of the borough: on 11 September 2026 the council launched a statutory consultation on extending Catford South's zone R, which runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm, to Arngask Road, Fordel Road, Glenfarg Road, Sandhurst Road, St Fillans Road and part of Torridon Road, a little over a kilometre north-west of the estate. The team also needs somewhere to park.

Is a small prefab kitchen a problem?
No. The racks and trays come out to be cleaned separately and the rest is done by hand in the kitchen, which needs room for the technician, the dust sheets and a working socket.
