The Hogsmill starts in Ewell village. Its springs rise in the pond in Bourne Hall park and in the Dipping Place, the old horse pond facing the Spring Street and London Road junction, where until recent times the water could be seen gushing up outside the Dog Gate.
A hundred listed entries in the old village
Epsom and Ewell made the old village a conservation area on 13 June 1972. The council's 2009 appraisal counted 100 listed building entries in it, all Grade II except St Mary's Church, which is II*. They range from No. 26 High Street, an open hall house of the early 16th century or before, and the jettied front of Nos. 11-15, rare in north Surrey, to weatherboarded cottages in Mill Lane and West Street and 17th to early 19th century houses for the gentry, mainly in Spring Street and Church Street. The new St Mary's opened on London Road in 1848; the flint and stone tower of the medieval church still stands in Church Street.
Bourne Hall replaced the 18th-century Garbrand Hall, pulled down in 1962. The new one, by the architects A.G. Sheppard Fidler and Associates, was built in 1967-70 as a library and social centre under a copper-clad dome 42.6 metres across, and it has been listed Grade II since April 2015.
A cottage kitchen is usually small, with a freestanding cooker or a built-in single fitted where the room allows. That suits the method. Ewell village car parks
The appraisal found the village centre constantly clogged with cars and commercial vehicles, and its 2006 survey work noted many front boundaries altered or removed to make room for parking. The borough runs three car parks here: Bourne Hall on Spring Street, with 100 spaces and a four-hour daytime limit; Dorset House on Cheam Road, with 68; and the High Street car park, with 46.
