Ewell East station has its ticket office and main entrance on Cheam Road, on the London-bound side. On the Epsom-bound side there is a second entrance from a footpath that links Cheam Road with Reigate Road near NESCOT, the college.
A private estate between Reigate Road and the railway
South of the station, Ewell Downs Road and The Green were laid out from the late 1920s over fields crossed by an old footpath, which still cuts between the two streets. A local builder, Ernest Harwood, put up the houses to designs by the Epsom architects Pettett and Gardner: detached, with steep tiled roofs, leaded lights and timber-framed decoration, and each first owner could vary the details. Three bedrooms was the usual size. The two roads are a conservation area, and the borough's 2009 appraisal counted 73 houses on Ewell Downs Road and 79 on The Green.
The appraisal says the original plan put the kitchen at the back of the house, reached from the hall. Where one has since been extended there is room for a double oven or a range cooker; an unaltered one is more likely to have a built-in single. The method does not change with the cooker: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets.
Unadopted roads behind white gates
The appraisal records that Ewell Downs Road and The Green are not adopted by Surrey County Council, that the residents own the roads and verges through two companies, and that white timber gates in places stop through traffic. The Census area that takes in Cheam Road, the station and Ewell Downs Road (Epsom and Ewell 010D) had 853 households in 2021. 71.6% lived in a detached house and 11.4% in a purpose-built flat, and 48.8% owned with a mortgage or loan. Three streets a short way west of the station, Collingridge Way, Halliday Close and Nuthatch Place, have postcodes first issued in 2017 and 2018. A new-build kitchen usually has an integrated oven, either a single under the worktop or a double in a tall housing.
