Evelyn is the only Lewisham ward that reaches the Thames. It is named after the diarist John Evelyn, who settled in Deptford in the early 1650s and laid out his famous garden at Sayes Court, now buried under Convoys Wharf and Sayes Court Park.
Flats on the Navy's old victualling yard
The Royal Victoria Victualling Yard, where beer was once brewed and biscuit baked for the fleet, closed in June 1961. The Pepys Estate was built on the site, and a few Georgian buildings were kept. The gateway on Grove Street dates from about 1768 and is probably by Samuel Wyatt. Behind it, the Colonnade Building of about 1788 was being turned into flats by the Greater London Council when it was listed at Grade II in March 1973. On Longshore, The Terrace is a row of seven officers' houses from about 1791, each three storeys over a basement.
Aragon Tower, by the river, is one of the estate's three 24-storey council towers, with 144 flats. The original flats were two-level maisonettes. Berkeley Homes bought the tower from Lewisham in 2002 and finished rebuilding it in 2006, adding penthouses that took it to 29 storeys.
So within a few hundred metres there are estate flats, refitted tower flats and Georgian buildings converted to housing, where the kitchen arrived long after the walls. An estate kitchen of the 1960s or 70s usually has a freestanding cooker; a refitted flat more often has a built-in single. The visit runs the same way in each: dust sheets first, then racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
Council tenants either side of Grove Street
Much of this is still council housing. In the small census area either side of Grove Street, from Oxestalls Road to Bowditch and Longshore (Lewisham 001A), 694 of the 732 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats at the 2021 Census: 94.8%. Of the same households, 59.3% rented from the council, 23.6% rented privately and only 9.2% owned their home.
A private let usually ends with a checkout inventory, and the oven is on it. Parking in Lewisham's Evelyn zone
The Evelyn zone (EN) came in during January 2025, and the zone table on Lewisham's site lists it as Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The estate roads are being looked at separately. After a consultation in winter 2024, Lewisham's Sustainable Streets page says new proposals are being prepared for Carteret Way, Crandley Court, Clement House and Pendennis Way, and Pepys Estate residents were asked for views on the zone between January and February 2026. Read the signs where you live before the visit, and tell us the road; the team needs somewhere to park.

Is St Nicholas church in Evelyn?
No. The church, Deptford Green and McMillan Street are just over the borough line in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, and they have their own page: Deptford St Nicholas.

Yes: £28 for a gas hob or £23 for a ceramic one, on top of the oven price.
What do you need from me on the day?
A working socket near the cooker, the oven switched off and cool when we arrive, and the name of the block and floor when you book.
