Evelyn is the only ward in Lewisham that touches the Thames. It covers the northern part of Deptford on the south bank, 14,435 people at the 2021 census packed into 1.12 square kilometres, and it takes its name from John Evelyn, who settled in Deptford in 1652 and bought Sayes Court off his father-in-law the year after.

Convoys Wharf is the site of Deptford Dockyard, the first of the Royal Dockyards, laid out for Henry VIII in 1513, and Sayes Court and its famous garden lie buried underneath it and the park next door, where Museum of London Archaeology dug up ground-floor walls still standing a metre high in places. The Pepys Estate went up in the 1960s on the Royal Navy Victualling Yard and was finished in 1973. It kept pieces of the yard: the Colonnade of 1768, the Rum Warehouses of 1780, the Gateway of 1788.
Estate flats, new-build flats, and the same fan cover
What that leaves is a ward that is mostly flats. Tower and slab blocks on the estate, then newer riverside schemes with integrated appliances as standard. Both usually mean one oven, £77, roughly ninety minutes, and a kitchen window that opens about four inches. Caustic gel in a room like that hangs around for days, so the racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to the heated tank in the van and only the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done indoors, by hand. New-build flats also tend to run a recirculating extractor hood rather than one ducted outside, which is £28 and worth doing at the same visit.

Lewisham brought the Evelyn Sustainable Streets zone in on Monday 3 February 2025, so parking without a valid permit now risks a PCN. That is our problem. We sort the bay before we knock.

Around ninety minutes for a single, about two hours for a double. It is heat-tested and signed off before we go.
The block has a lift but it is often out. Does that matter?
Not to the price. Parts get carried to the tank and back either way.
Can you do the hob and microwave too?
Yes. Hob £23–28 by type, microwave £22.
Will my flat smell of oven cleaner afterwards?
It should not. The products used indoors are non-caustic.
