Erith town centre and the river
The old town was an industrial port: Henry VIII had a naval dockyard here, the railway arrived in 1849, and engineering, armaments and cable works made it one of the most important industrial areas in the south-east. Wartime bombing and the slump in trade afterwards led to a major rebuilding of the centre in the 1960s, and many of the original buildings were lost. The council's town-centre page now points to the refurbished Pier Square, Riverside Gardens and the 1906 Carnegie library on Walnut Tree Road. The Riverside Shopping Centre has a Morrisons and free, time-limited parking, according to the council. Bexley's local plan, adopted in April 2023, allocates the western part of the centre and the Pier Road parade (site ERI03, Pier Road East) for residential-led, mixed-use redevelopment with shops on the ground floor; that is a planning allocation, and no start date is given.
In Erith ward at the 2021 Census, 46.7% of households lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 28.1% rented from a social landlord, and 6.3% were in shared ownership, almost five times the Bexley share of 1.3%.
Lesney Park's Victorian and Edwardian villas
Across the railway from the town centre is Lesney Park, built on higher ground, on the parkland of Erith's manor house, after the house came down in 1858. Little was built until the Wheatley estate was sold in 1874 for £170,000, but by 1900 most of Lesney Park was up: large detached and semi-detached houses on Park Crescent, Lesney Park Road and Avenue Road, set on wide roads with grass verges and trees. Bexley made it the Lesney Park Road conservation area on 19 February 1992, with the Grade II* Christ Church of 1874 on the corner of Victoria Road and Bexley Road.
Houses of that size often have room for a big cooker. A kitchen in a villa may hold a range or even an AGA rather than a fitted single, and that changes both the time on site and the price.

New homes at The Quarry
On the old Erith Quarry, neglected for over 30 years, L&Q and the Anderson Group are building The Quarry, with homes for sale and for shared ownership off Chalk Road; in January 2022 the scheme was reported at more than 800 homes across the site, with a primary school. A new flat or house there usually has a fitted oven; the racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and glass are cleaned by hand indoors.

Parking in Erith's controlled zone
Lesney Park Road, Victoria Road, Pier Road, Queen Street, Walnut Tree Road and the High Street are among the roads in the Erith Station zone on Bexley's list of controlled parking roads. The council's permit page gives the hours of its Erith (ER) zone as Monday to Friday, 10am to 12 noon, but warns that some roads in it keep different times, shown on their signs. Outside controlled hours the bays are free for anyone, so on a standard-hours road a visit after midday needs no visitor scratch card.
