The Green that names the village was kept open by the Egham Enclosure Act of 1814, "for the Pleasure of the Inhabitants and Ornament of their Residences", and it is now registered as a town and village green under the Commons Act 1965. North of the village, on Cooper's Hill, Edward Maufe's Air Forces Memorial of 1953 carries the names of more than 20,000 airmen and airwomen of the Commonwealth air forces who have no known grave.
Listed villas on Middle Hill and round the Green
In the 18th century the Green, within easy reach of the royal court at Windsor, drew gentry families who built villas facing it. Castle Hill went up between 1758 and 1763 in a Gothick style, designed by Stiff Leadbetter for Sir John Elwill MP. The oldest surviving house is probably The Old House, a pair of 17th-century cottages that were given a Queen Anne front about 1717. Middle Hill has more listed villas than any other road, six listed buildings in all, among them Englefield Green House, the only Grade II* house in the conservation area. Most of these villas are two storeys, set in large grounds, and some of those grounds have since been divided up for housing.
The Englefield Green conservation area was first designated in January 1970, and Runnymede Borough Council redrew its boundary from 1 December 2023. A house of this size often has a big kitchen, which is where a 90cm range or an AGA is most likely to be. A range takes two to three hours and costs £143; a two-oven AGA is £143, takes about half a day, and has to be switched off the night before.
Harvest Road, Victoria Street and 'New Egham'
Immediately south of the Green is the Victorian part of the village. It began in the mid-19th century around Harvest Road, South Road, Victoria Street and Priest Hill, and some maps called it 'New Egham'. After the 1814 enclosure the sandpits on Harvest Road were allotted to the poor; labourers' cottages went up around them, and as the pits were worked out more houses followed a few at a time. Later housing has joined this part of the village to Egham to the south-east.
At the 2021 Census, Runnymede 002A, the small area that takes in Victoria Street, Albert Road, Alexandra Road and South Road, had 416 households, and 42.3% of them rented privately. A quarter (24.7%) lived in a terraced house and 18.0% in a purpose-built block of flats. Parking on Harvest Road, Albert Road and Victoria Street
In its 2025 parking review Surrey County Council called Harvest Road heavily parked: near South Road cars park on both sides although the road is too narrow for that and through traffic, so those on the east side end up on the pavement. The council's decisions report of October 2025 went ahead with double yellow lines on the west side there and a marked, unrestricted bay on the east side. It also went ahead with double yellow lines on the east side of Albert Road, from No. 9 to the South Road junction, because double parking on that narrow street blocks the road. The county's review page, reviewed on 12 August 2026, still gives 27 April 2026 as the date the order making these changes enforceable comes into operation. The bays on Victoria Street are Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, two hours with no return within two hours. The conservation area appraisal notes that there is no path along Coopers Hill Lane.
Racks, trays, side runners and the fan cover come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity and the door glass are cleaned by hand indoors. A drive, or a space close to the door, helps, so give us the street when you book and read the signs on the day.

Yes, any day of the week, and a Saturday or Sunday costs the same as a weekday. Leave the oven off that morning so it is cool when we arrive.
Where will the van park on Harvest Road?
Tell us the house number when you book. If you have a drive the van can use it; if not, the nearest legal space will do, and the Victoria Street bays allow two hours.
Can the hob of a range cooker be done on the same visit?
Yes. The hob or hood of a range is £48, on top of £143 for the range itself; mention it when you book.
