Cottages and villas of the New Town
South of Cecil Road is the grid the National Freehold Land Association laid out in 1852 and called Enfield New Town: Raleigh Road, Sydney Road and Essex Road. Raleigh Road was built first, and one cottage there has an 1859 date stone; by 1896 all three roads were full. Each street has its own scale. Raleigh Road is small London stock-brick artisan cottages on narrow plots. The west side of Sydney Road has six pairs of two-storey semi-detached villas. Essex Road has the larger houses, five of them detached, running down to the gates of Town Park. The council's 2015 appraisal says an Article 4 direction was brought in on all three roads in 2006.
In a cottage like those on Raleigh Road the kitchen is often in a narrow back addition, and the cooker may be a built-in single under the worktop or a slim freestanding one. That suits the method: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are worked on in the kitchen, by hand.
Gentleman's Row, north of the centre
North of the centre, Gentleman's Row faced out over Enfield Chase; there were four houses on it by 1572. Its 18th-century villas dominate the southern end, but past Sandy Walk the path becomes a short street of artisan cottages: Nos. 27 to 33 from around the 1830s, William Place (Nos. 35 to 45) from 1871, and Belmont Cottages opposite from the 1890s. Getting the van close in the town centre
The council is rebuilding the centre's streets as its Enfield Town Liveable Neighbourhood scheme. Its Phase 2B began on 11 May 2026, is estimated to take about 28 months, and covers Southbury Road, London Road, Cecil Road and The Town, with no waiting and no loading restrictions where bus infrastructure has moved. The 2015 conservation appraisal describes Sydney Road as the entry to a one-way system through the New Town.
