The Royal Small Arms Factory opened beside the lock on the Lea Navigation in 1816, was the Army's main source of rifles through the 19th century, and closed in the late 1980s.
Government Row, the factory's own terraces
The factory housed its workers in Government Row, built along the river; there were sixty houses by 1841. The council made the lock and part of the row a conservation area in 1976, extended it to the rest of the row south of Smeaton Road in 1979, and added the factory site in 2008. Twenty-two of the old houses are listed: stock brick, slate roofs and 12-pane sashes. The larger four-room cottages on generous plots were for foremen. Nos. 4 to 14 are paired three-bay houses and Nos. 18 to 28 paired two-bay ones, and replica terraces have been built in the gaps, so small houses once again open straight onto the towpath.
A cottage of that size often has a small kitchen, with a built-in single or a narrow freestanding cooker. The council's appraisal notes car parking in front of the row, but a house facing the towpath can still mean a walk from the nearest space.
Enfield Island Village, inside the old factory
After the factory closed, its listed buildings, including the machine shop of the 1850s, were turned into flats, offices and workshops, and new streets were built around them. The canal basin, filled in and built over during the factory years, was partly dug out again. James Lee Square is the centre, with the old machine shop's clock tower; the former Pattern Room is now Benson Court.
The new housing was built between 1997 and 2003. At the 2021 Census one small area (Enfield 003B), which takes in Aldridge Avenue, Warwick Road and Somerset Road, South Ordnance Road and part of Government Row, had 1,140 households. 52.0% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, and 14.2% were shared owners, against 1.1% across the borough. Homes of that age often have built-in ovens, a single under the worktop or a double at eye level, and a replacement fitted since may well be pyrolytic.

Smeaton Road, the newer road off Ordnance Road, links Island Village to the rest of Enfield Lock and bridges the River Lea and the Navigation on the way.
