The road bridge onto the island, spanning the River Lee Navigation, was finished in 1998. Water is most of the boundary here: the Navigation on one side, the River Lea, the Cattlegate Flood Relief Channel and Newmans Weir around the rest. The Ministry of Defence decommissioned the Royal Small Arms Factory in 1984 and sold it to British Aerospace, Lee Valley Developments came next as a joint venture with Trafalgar House, and in 1996 Fairview Homes bought the hundred-acre brownfield site and built more than 1,200 houses and flats on it, a quarter of them social housing. So the kitchens all date from one narrow window. One-bedroom flats through to five-bedroom houses, most with an integrated single oven fitted at build and replaced once since. A private trust runs the common ground
The Enfield Island Village Trust manages the common areas, the utilities and the legal covenants, which makes this a private development rather than ordinary council-adopted street. Give us the road name and the block when you book. The van needs a spot near the door because racks, shelves, trays and side runners are carried out to a heated tank inside it. The factory left more than the name
The Royal Small Arms Factory opened at Enfield Lock in 1816 and made the Lee Enfield rifle; by 1860 some 1,700 men were turning out 90,000 small arms a year, and eighty-one cottages went up in Government Row between 1854 and 1858 to house them. The RSA Island Centre opened in October 2001 with an interpretation exhibition about all of it.

Do you carry your own water?
Yes, water and the heated tank are both in the van, so nothing is tipped down your sink and no bowl of grease sits on your worktop.
The oven is the original Fairview one. Will cleaning break it?
It should not. Nothing caustic goes near it, the parts come out the way they were designed to, and the oven is switched on and heat-tested before we sign off.
Can you do the hob and the hood at the same visit?
Yes. A hob is £23–28 depending on type and an extractor hood is £28, added to the oven price rather than charged separately.
