The settlement along Hertford Road between Hoe Lane and Green Street was called Cocksmiths End in 1572; by 1754 it went by the name Enfield Highway, its houses close together along the road.
St James's, the almshouses and Green Street
Several listed buildings are within a short walk of each other. St James's church went up in 1831 to designs by W. C. Lochner, a tall stock-brick box in the Commissioners' Gothic style; its chancel was rebuilt in 1969 after a fire two years earlier. On the west side of Hertford Road, Nos. 346 to 356 are Wright's Almshouses, a symmetrical stock-brick row whose tablet says Charles Wright of Enfield Highway built and endowed them in 1847 for six poor women. Along Green Street, the White Horse is a timber-framed building of the 17th century or earlier, and Nos. 98 and 100 are probably a 17th-century timber-framed house split in two, No. 100 weatherboarded. All of these are listed at Grade II.
The 1930s council estates and the Longfield estate
Much of the building here dates from the 20th century. In the 1930s the council built extensively here, one of its two largest estates being south of Carterhatch Lane around Central Avenue, and shopping parades replaced the smaller houses and shops near St James's. Private builders followed: Thomas Blade of Romford put up the Longfield estate, 284 houses and four shops in Longfield, Winnington and Dell roads and the Loning, after 1934, and the Enfield Highway Co-operative Society built 104 houses in Meadway and Crossway. A council estate around Addison Road, east of Hertford Road, followed in the 1950s, and in the late 1960s the council put up tower blocks at the western end of Bell Lane.
Carterhatch ward, which takes in Brick Lane and Hoe Lane, had 4,049 households at the 2021 Census. 27.0% rented from the council, the highest share of any ward in Enfield, and a further 6.9% from a housing association. 36.6% lived in a purpose-built flat, 30.2% in a terrace and 24.1% in a semi.

The only controlled zone near Enfield Highway on the council's map as archived in December 2022 is the one it names Enfield College, at the Ponders End end of the road:
