In 1895 William Carter, a developer from Parkstone in Dorset, bought 200 acres, the southern part of the manor of Nelmes, and began the Emerson Park estate.
Large plots on the old Nelmes estate
By about 1905 his company, Homesteads Ltd, had built more than 200 houses in Ernest Road, Herbert Road, Parkstone Avenue and the roads around them. The Victoria County History says it was planned as an exclusive garden suburb, with many plots of an acre or more and original prices of £300 to £1,000. The northern 241 acres of Nelmes were sold in 1901, and by 1904 houses by the architects Clare & Ross were going up in Elm Grove and Woodland Avenue. Emerson Park station opened in 1909. The 16th-century manor house of Nelmes was pulled down in 1967; one outbuilding survives as Capel Nelmes, on Sylvan Avenue.
The Emerson Park Policy Area
Havering's planning guidance for the Emerson Park Policy Area, published in 2009, covers the streets between Butts Green Road and Wingletye Lane north of the railway. It rules out turning houses into flats and, in the sector of large houses in spacious grounds, asks for new plots at least 23m wide; flats are kept to the Butts Green Road and Ardleigh Green Road frontage.
The census shows the result. In the area the House of Commons Library names Emerson Park, 67.5% of the 2,150 households lived in a detached house in 2021. 88.5% owned their home and 51.7% owned it outright.

A two-oven AGA is £143 and a four-oven AGA £187. A 90cm range is £143, a 100cm range £167, and the hob or hood of a range £48. Every price is fixed on the phone before the visit.
Parking for the van in Emerson Park
Havering's charges list has charging bays on Butts Green Road and Candover Road, from 8.30am to 6.30pm with a 3-hour maximum stay and no return within 2 hours; Sundays are free. An AGA clean runs longer than any of those bays allow. If the house has a drive, that is the place for the van.

Brilliant clean, my oven looks like brand new. A 5 star clean.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
