The Adelphi, the block of streets between the Strand and the Embankment, was built on brick arches. When Robert Adam and his brothers developed it between 1768 and 1774, the streets ran on arches that rose from one tier to three as the ground fell towards the river, with subterranean streets duplicating those above.
Flats around the Adelphi
Most of Adelphi Terrace, the Adam houses facing the river, was demolished in 1936, and most homes here now are flats. At the 2021 Census the output area covering John Adam Street, Robert Street, York Buildings and Buckingham Street had 152 households. Of those, 123 lived in a purpose-built block, 69 rented privately and 39 rented from a council or housing association.
A flat in a block like these usually has a fitted kitchen with a built-in oven in a tall housing or under the hob. Where the kitchen has no outside wall, the hood above it normally recirculates through a charcoal filter instead of venting out. The hood can be done at the same visit as an extractor hood clean at £28.
Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets, and the door comes apart where it is built to.
Buckingham Street and the York Water Gate
Buckingham Street is older than the Adelphi. Every one of its original houses was up before 1680, mostly four storeys over a basement, and Samuel Pepys lived at No. 12 from 1679 before moving to No. 14 in 1688. At the bottom of the street the York Water Gate, built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1626, once opened onto the Thames. Since the Victoria Embankment opened in 1870 it has stood in the gardens, about 150 yards from the water.
Houses of that age often have tall, narrow stairs. They add a little time to the visit, nothing more, so tell us the floor when you book.

Parking near Villiers Street
Villiers Street, John Adam Street and Buckingham Street fall in Westminster's sub-zone G1, where pay-to-park bays are charged 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. The council prices each session by the vehicle's CO2 emissions, and the maximum stay in a paid bay is usually 4 hours, which covers a single or a double. There is no visitor permit to borrow from the household, since Westminster runs no on-street visitor scheme. On Sundays the paid bays cost nothing.

About 90 minutes for a single and about 2 hours for a double, then the oven is heated and you look at it before we leave.
Said after the sign-off
Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
