Work on the Well Hall estate for Royal Arsenal munitions workers began on Monday 8 February 1915, and every house was finished by that December. In June 1925 the government sold it to the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society for £375,000, and the society renamed it the Progress Estate.
The Progress Estate at Well Hall
The houses stand mostly in terraces of four or six, laid out on garden city lines on both sides of Well Hall Road. The street names come from Vincent's Records of Woolwich, published in 1886: Congreve and Shrapnel Roads for the Arsenal's weapons, Lovelace Green for the poet Richard Lovelace, born in Woolwich in 1618. The University of Greenwich's Ideal Homes history quotes one family who moved into a new mid-terrace house on Congreve Road on 31 July 1915: it had a big range for cooking, with a fire and a boiler behind it, and a black copper in the corner for washday. In August 1915 the tenant of a three-bedroom house on Prince Rupert Road paid 10s 6d a week.
In November 1980 the society sold its interest in some 500 of the houses and flats to Hyde Housing Association. In the area round Congreve, Shrapnel and Prince Rupert Roads (Greenwich 027B), 59.7% of the 667 households lived in a terraced house in 2021; a quarter (25.0%) of households rented from a social landlord, but only 4.5% from the council.

Kitchens in houses of that age are often modest, so a modern cooker in one is more likely a 60cm freestanding model or a built-in single, unless the back of the house has been extended.
Cameron Corbett's Eltham Park streets
East of the Progress Estate, Archibald Cameron Corbett bought 334 acres of farmland in October 1899 for £50,000 and built the Eltham Park Estate on it between 1900 and 1914. Westmount Road is its spine, and Corbett, a Glasgow man, gave the side roads Scottish names: Craigton, Dunvegan, Elderslie, Gourock and Greenholm among them. The census area Greenwich 023, which the House of Commons Library names Eltham North and which takes in Glenesk Road, Earlshall Road and much of Westmount Road, had 2,591 households in 2021: 75.4% owned their home, and only 9.5% lived in a purpose-built flat. In the smaller area round Glenesk Road (Greenwich 023A), 83.6% of households lived in a semi.
Some Edwardian semis will have been extended at the back, and a bigger kitchen may hold a built-in double or a 90cm range. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors.

Parking: three zones and streets outside any zone
Royal Greenwich's CPZ map splits the area. The southern ends of Congreve Road and Prince Rupert Road, at the south edge of the Progress Estate, are in the Eltham North zone, Monday to Saturday 9am to 5.30pm, while Shrapnel and Maudslay Roads and Lovelace Green are outside any zone. On the Corbett streets, Greenholm and Elderslie Roads are mostly in Eltham Outer and Craigton Road is in Eltham Station, both Monday to Friday 11am to 12.30pm; further north, Dumbreck and Dairsie Roads show no zone. The council says the map is a guide only, so read the plate on your street.

Eltham North stopped being a ward in May 2022. The Progress Estate, Westmount Road and Craigton Road are now in Eltham Park and Progress ward, and the streets nearest the town centre, Greenholm and Elderslie Roads among them, in Eltham Town and Avery Hill.
