Elm Park station was provided in May 1935 on the existing line through Hornchurch, after the builder Richard Costain and Sons negotiated with the railway company for a stop serving its new estate.
The 1930s estate round the station
The Victoria County History of Essex places Elm Park among the new suburbs of the 1920s and 1930s, in the west of the old Hornchurch parish, where a new station was built. Havering's 2024 character study calls it a planned community: the homes went up at much the same time, so the streets have a repeating rhythm of semis with front gardens, set back from the road. Its average for Elm Park is 31.1 homes per hectare, against 23.0 for Hornchurch and 16.9 for Upminster.

A 1930s semi built to a price usually had a compact kitchen with a space for a gas cooker. Where the kitchen has since been extended, a double or a wider single oven often goes in. The 2021 Census splits Elm Park in two
After the Second World War, according to the VCH, large estates went up at Elm Park and South Hornchurch, and a large share of the post-1945 houses there were council-built. The 2021 Census figures differ between the two census areas the House of Commons Library names Elm Park East and Elm Park West. In the east, 57.3% of households lived in a semi, 81.0% owned, and only 3.3% rented from a social landlord. In the west, terraces were the commonest home at 40.0%, and 15.0% of households rented socially, with 12.4% of all households renting from the council.

Parking by The Broadway and Station Parade
The pay bays on Elm Park Broadway and Station Parade are charged from 8.30am to 6.30pm, with a three-hour limit and no return within two hours. The council car park on St Nicholas Avenue, by Elm Park Library, charges from 7am to 6pm. Both are free on Sundays, according to Havering's charges list. On the estate roads, check the signs for permit bays and give us the street name, so the team knows where to park.
