The Hythe, the short riverside street at the Surrey end of Staines Bridge, has been a conservation area since 1970. When Runnymede Borough Council reviewed it in 2019, the boundary was moved to take in the southern half of the bridge, which until then sat in Spelthorne's Staines conservation area although the land is Runnymede's. Hythe is the Saxon word for a port or landing place; the bend in the Thames here made it a good spot to berth boats.

A Sainsbury's just west of Thorpe Road stands on the site of Lagonda's first car factory; cars were made there until 1948.
Across Egham Hythe ward, 20.8% of households lived in a terraced house at the 2021 Census, against 15.4% for Runnymede. A kitchen at the back of a narrow terrace often holds a freestanding cooker or a single oven under the worktop, with the front door opening straight onto the street. Permit bays on Farmers Road and Hythe Road
Several streets near the bridge have permit schemes, run by Surrey County Council. Farmers Road has a bay at its northwest corner for permit holders or a stay of up to two hours, from 8am to 8.30pm, with no return within two hours. The Area C permit scheme covers addresses in Hythe Road, Cumberland Street and Railway Terrace. In the Runnymede parking review 2025 the county proposed running Area C Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8.30pm, to match The Hythe's own scheme. Of 68 replies, 59 objected, and in October 2025 it kept the existing hours.

It is on the Egham side of the river. Many addresses use the Staines-upon-Thames post town and a TW18 postcode, but Egham Hythe is in Runnymede borough with Egham, while Staines across the bridge is in Spelthorne.
My house on The Hythe opens straight onto the pavement. Does that matter?
Not for the clean. Dust sheets go down first. It helps to know if the nearest bay is a permit bay.

How long does a double oven take?
About two hours, and a single about 90 minutes. The oven should be cool when we arrive.
