There are around 50 homes and about 120 people on 8.9 acres here, and not one of those front doors can have a van parked at it. The island has no vehicle access at all. Until 1957 everything crossed by ferry, then the first footbridge went up, and the one standing now replaced it in August 1998. Trolleys do the work a van would do anywhere else, and in the early twentieth century a set of rope pulleys handled the lighter goods.
The parts go to the tank, not the other way round
Our heated dip tank lives in the van, and the van stops on the Twickenham bank. So the shape of the job inverts. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come off the appliance, cross the bridge and soak on the mainland side, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in your kitchen with non-caustic products, which is the half that was always going to happen indoors anyway. Booking oven cleaning over the footbridge costs £77 for a single, the same as anywhere else we go. Access is not a surcharge.
Private ground, and two ends you cannot walk on
All the plots and walkways on the island are privately owned, which is worth saying plainly: there is no public route past your gate. Nature reserves close off both ends. In between sit two or three boatyards, Twickenham Rowing Club, Richmond Yacht Club, and the Eel Pie Island Art Studios, 26 of them, open to the public twice a year.
The hotel is gone but the name stuck
The Eel Pie Island Hotel dated from the nineteenth century and turned into a jazz venue in 1956, then a rhythm and blues one, with the Rolling Stones, the Who and Pink Floyd all playing there before it was forced to close in 1967. It came back briefly as Colonel Barefoot's Rock Garden in 1969 and burned down in 1971.

No. Prices are fixed and quoted on the phone before you book.
How long will you be here?
Around ninety minutes for a single oven, roughly two hours for a double, plus the walk each way.
Will my kitchen smell of chemicals?
It should not. Nothing caustic is used indoors, and the soaking happens off the island.
Which side do you park on?
The Twickenham bank, by the bridge. Tell us the house name when you call, because the walkways are private and not signed like a street.
