No road reaches Eel Pie Island. Richmond Council's appraisal of the Twickenham Riverside conservation area says the island is reached on foot at a single point, over a footbridge from Twickenham; the first bridge opened in 1957, paid for by the island's hotel, which was then a jazz club.
Houses on Eel Pie Island
Early maps show three islands that became two and then one. The Eel Pie Island Oral History Project puts the island at 50 houses and 120 residents, and two of the old boatyards survive, with artists' workshops and houseboat moorings. The council's appraisal says the first houses, built at the start of the 20th century, were single-storey timber bungalows and chalets; later buildings use brick and concrete, and two-storey ones are increasingly common, particularly at the northern end. The wooded ends of the island are Metropolitan Open Land and a nature site, so the homes sit in the middle.
The van stays on the Twickenham bank
The van cannot cross, so it stays on the mainland and the team walks over the footbridge. The racks, trays and side runners are lifted out of the oven, then soaked and cleaned away from it. The rest is done where the oven stands:

Parking on the Twickenham side
The Twickenham side is changing. A council letter of May 2025 said the riverside works on The Embankment, between Water Lane and Wharf Lane, would start on 9 June 2025 and that the parking spaces round the site in The Embankment, Water Lane and Wharf Lane would be removed for good. It also said loading for businesses, Eel Pie Island's included, would carry on in set places during the works, with new loading bays in Water Lane and on The Embankment once they finish. The site is in Central Twickenham's Zone D, which on the council's zone list runs Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 6.30pm. Only by the walk each way, which is already in the timing above. The oven itself is cleaned where it stands.
Where are the racks soaked?
That depends on the team. Some use a heated tank when they can park close, and otherwise everything is done in the kitchen. The price is the same either way, and you can ask when you book.
Do I need to do anything before the visit?
