One road, two boroughs at The Hyde
The road follows the Roman Watling Street, and along its length it divides four boroughs: Harrow and Brent on the west side, Barnet and Camden on the east. For a long time hardly anything was built on it here. Brent's history of Kingsbury puts that down to poor sewers and no public transport; trams ran along the road from 1904, yet buses only arrived in 1920.
Houses followed the Underground. Barnet's local studies service describes the Colin Park Estate, built around Colindeep Lane by F. H. Stucke & Co in 1927, as typical of Colindale's suburban growth, and some of its houses were designed by E. G. Trobridge. West of the road, on the Brent side, the side streets are named after Lake District places: Rydal Gardens, Derwent Avenue, Ennerdale Drive, Crummock Gardens, Lodore Gardens.
The two small census areas that meet at the parade are mixed. On the Brent side (Brent 002C, 750 households in 2021), 34.4% of households lived in a purpose-built flat, 25.3% in a semi and 23.1% in a terraced house, and 41.8% rented privately. Behind Varley Parade (Barnet 043E, 618 households), flats made up 53.1% and semis 36.9%; 38.3% rented privately and 6.0% were in shared ownership.
So a visit here could be a built-in single in a flat, or a freestanding cooker in a semi from between the wars. With about four households in ten renting privately, a fair share of these ovens will face an inventory clerk at checkout. Parking at Varley Parade: zone CH or zone CLS
A single takes about 90 minutes and a double about two hours, and the team needs somewhere to park for all of it. Which rules apply depends on the side of the road.

- On Brent's zone map it starts just north of 191 Edgware Road and takes in the road frontage and the end of Wakemans Hill Avenue, controlled 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. On the same map, Springfield Mount and the Lake District streets lie outside any zone. Check the signs on the day.

Barnet set the Colindale South zone to begin on 15 December 2025, as a trial of up to eighteen months, so its hours may still change. A Saturday visit is outside its hours, but zone CH on the Brent side is controlled on Saturdays. In Brent a resident buys a visitor session on RingGo, and nothing has to be shown in the windscreen.

How is the oven cleaned?
Dust sheets go down before any part comes out. The racks and trays are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. The oven is then put back together, heated and checked with you before the team leaves.
