Edgware High Street is the Roman Watling Street, and for centuries it split two parishes: Little Stanmore on the west side and Edgware on the east. It still splits two boroughs. HA8 7NZ, on the east side, is in Barnet; HA8 7RL, just across the road, is in Harrow.
Two councils, two wards called Edgware
Both councils have a ward named Edgware. At the 2021 Census, Barnet's had 7,212 households: 31.5% lived in a purpose-built flat and 29.6% rented privately. Harrow's had 4,779 households, nearly half of them (48.3%) in a semi, and 37.1% rented privately.
With between three and four in ten households renting privately on either side of the road, tenancies end all through the year, and the oven usually gets its own line on a checkout inventory. Edgware's older houses, from 1910 to the 1930s
Edgware was still a village in 1914, and the old parish had 1,516 people at the 1921 count. The Underground station opened in August 1924; by 1931 the parish population was 5,352, and by 1951 it was 17,513.
Barnet's local history dates much of the building round Station Road. The Garden City houses, designed by E. Appleton and dated 1910, look like those in Hampstead Garden Suburb. North of Station Road and west of Hale Lane, 65 acres of what had been Pipers Green became the Edgware Manor Estate in 1914, but George Cross only built there after the news in 1920 that the Tube was coming. Old Rectory Gardens, with its suntrap windows, went up in 1933.
A house of that age was built with a small kitchen. Where the kitchen is still the original room, expect a freestanding cooker or a built-in single; a knocked-through or extended kitchen has room for a double or a 90cm range.
New flats at Broadfields and the Broadwalk
North of Edgware Way, Broadfields was mainly built from 1936, when John Laing started its Edgware Estate. Barnet has since added 28 flats for affordable rent there, in two blocks of three and four storeys on the site of old garages and pram sheds.
A far bigger change is planned for the town centre. In July 2025 Barnet's strategic planning committee voted 6-3 for outline plans by Ballymore and Places for London to replace the Broadwalk Centre and the bus station with 3,365 homes, in blocks of up to 29 storeys; the first phase, due by 2031, holds 1,000 of them. Flats like these are normally fitted with built-in ovens. The racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are done by hand indoors.

Parking in Edgware's zone K
Edgware has a Barnet controlled parking zone, zone K, which takes in roads such as Manor Park Crescent (named in a council notice of July 2026). Hours vary from zone to zone, so check the signs on your street, or give us the road when you book and we will plan where the team can park. West of the High Street the roads are Harrow's, and Harrow's signs apply.
