Eaton Square is the largest square in London, and Thomas Cubitt laid the first block out from 1827 on marsh he levelled with spoil from his St Katharine Docks works. Every building on it is statutorily listed and the six central gardens are Grade II on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. Listing is why kitchens here sit where the consent allowed rather than where a modern designer would put them, often deep in a plan four or five storeys tall with a basement under it.
The lateral conversions set the working day
Many of the original townhouses were divided into flats and maisonettes under the Grosvenor Estate, and a good number cut sideways across more than one house, which produces flats with long internal runs and a kitchen that is a genuine walk from the front door and another walk again from the kerb. Integrated single ovens are the common find in the converted flats, Miele and Gaggenau mostly. The undivided houses are a different job. If there is a two-oven AGA in an Eaton Square kitchen, that is £143 and a longer booking.
The mews behind count as Eaton Square too
Eaton Mews North, Eaton Mews West and the stretches off Eaton Place and Eaton Terrace were stabling for the big houses and are now small two-storey homes with ground-floor kitchens. Short carry to the van. The catch is width: a mews with cars either side leaves nothing, so we drop kit first and park after.
Westminster zone A, and no charge on top
- Eaton Square falls in Westminster's zone A, which covers Knightsbridge, Belgravia and Pimlico. We pay for the bay.
- Belgravia is west of Grosvenor Place, so it is outside the Congestion Charge zone. ULEZ applies.
- No premium-area surcharge for an SW1X postcode, and no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.

Questions from Belgravia
The kitchen is on the lower ground floor. Is that a problem?
No, it just adds carrying. Racks and runners go up to the tank in the van and come back down clean.
Will there be a smell in the house afterwards?
There should not be. The caustic side stays in the tank outside. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand with non-caustic products.
Do you charge Belgravia prices?
We charge one set of prices. A single oven is £77 on Eaton Square and £77 in Croydon, quoted on the phone.
Can you work around a housekeeper's schedule?
Yes, seven days. A single is about ninety minutes, a double closer to two hours.
