East Wickham's old St Michael's, on Upper Wickham Lane, is a little flint, rubble and brick church. It has been listed Grade II* since 1953 and is now used by a Greek Orthodox congregation.
Upper Wickham Lane and the old church
Historic England's entry puts the church's origin probably in the 12th century, judging by the lancet window in the chancel (Wikipedia and Hidden London say the 13th); the shingled bellcote was added in 1897 and the building was restored in 1926. Its fittings have been largely removed, and a new St Michael's was built on an adjoining site and consecrated in 1933. Also on the lane, the school building of 1879, with its octagonal spire and the schoolmaster's house beside it, is listed Grade II and has been turned into homes. East Wickham Farmhouse, on Wickham Street, is listed Grade II; Historic England describes it as a refronted timber-framed medieval hall house.
From munitions huts to council houses
In 1916 the Royal Arsenal put up the East Wickham Hutments near St Michael's, prefabricated homes for its wartime workers, with a theatre of their own and frequent complaints about the drains. Some lasted into the 1950s. In the 1920s Bexley Urban District Council borrowed £400,000 for the Welling Council Housing Scheme, 426 houses; Russ Willey's gazetteer places them on the fields of East Wickham Farm in 1922. Private builders filled in around them, and in 1938 the builders Alabasters put up an estate of new houses on Glenmore Road. The farm's surviving fields became East Wickham Open Space, 34 hectares between Wickham Street and Glenmore Road; in the 1950s part of it took bomb-damage rubble and green waste as landfill before it was levelled and grassed.
At the 2021 Census, 63.1% of the 5,930 households in East Wickham ward (2022 boundaries) lived in a semi-detached house, 19.3% in a terrace and 12.5% in a purpose-built flat. Three in four (74.7%) owned their home, and 36.1% owned it outright. Semis from the 1920s and 30s tend to have a small kitchen at the back. Unextended, one often holds a freestanding cooker or a single oven under the worktop; once the kitchen has been pushed out into the garden, there may be room for a built-in double at eye level.
Either way, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, and the door is split where its design allows. Dust sheets go down before anything comes apart.

Parking off Upper Wickham Lane
