Richmond Bridge, finished in 1777, carries Richmond Road across the Thames into East Twickenham, and the road follows a route to Twickenham village that goes back to the Domesday Book.
Houses on the old Cambridge House grounds
From 1610 the area between Richmond Road and Marble Hill Park was best known for Cambridge House and its grounds, and little changed until 1846, when the estate began to be sold off to developers. Cambridge Park was built in the last quarter of the 19th century in those former grounds: three and four storey villas and mansions in gault brick round a triangular green with tennis courts and a bowling green. St Stephen's Passage follows the old short cut to the bridge. St Stephen's Gardens and Norman Avenue, of about 1898, are red-brick semis on a smaller scale than Cambridge Park, and Cambridge Park Court is an interwar residential development.
Nearer the river there are flats. Clevedon Road has five three-storey Victorian mansion blocks (Clevedon Mansions, North Court, Balmoral Mansions, Cambridge Court and Riverview Mansions), with Heatherdene Mansions opposite on Cambridge Road, and further south Meadowside is a large L-shaped Art Deco block of the 1930s. Richmond Road itself has Edwardian shopping parades of two and a half storeys in red brick, along the south side and part of the north.
The 2021 Census shows how much of this is flats. In the small area between Richmond Road and the river, from Clevedon Road to Haversham Close (Richmond upon Thames 009A), 889 households were recorded:
Mansion flats on Clevedon Road
A flat in a Victorian mansion block usually has a modest kitchen with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker, while a villa on Cambridge Park is more likely to have a double. On the second floor of a mansion block the stairs matter more than the cooker, so mention the floor when you call. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, and the door is split where its design allows.

Zone F, East Twickenham
On the council's zone map, Cambridge Park, Denton Road and Haversham Close fall in zone F, East Twickenham, which the CPZ times page lists as 10am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, with permit and pay-and-display bays and no charge on bank holidays.
