Most of East Twickenham stands on one old estate. Twickenham Meadows ran to 74 acres, second in size here only to Twickenham Park, and at its centre stood a three-storey brick house of about 1610 that ended up known as Cambridge House, which the satirical poet Richard Owen Cambridge bought in 1751 and held until he died in 1802, after which his son George, an archdeacon, began cutting the land into parts. The house came down in the 1930s.
Foulkes built 160 houses, then went bankrupt
The estate sold in 1895 to a builder, Henry Cresswell Foulkes, who set about it in earnest. By 1908 he had put up 160 houses, seven blocks of flats and 54 shops with living accommodation over them. Then he ran out of money. That burst is why the streets here read as one period, and why so many addresses are a flat above a shopfront.
Flats over shops, houses behind
A flat of that build usually has one cavity, which is £77 and about ninety minutes. The larger Victorian and Edwardian houses off Cambridge Park more often run a stacked double at £110. Newer riverside stock is different again, and the gated Richmond Bridge development alone holds 226 flats and 34 townhouses. If there is a two-oven AGA in the kitchen, that is £143, and it has to be off and cold before we start.
The dirty half happens outside
Shelves, racks, trays and side runners go out to the heated dip tank in the van. Cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand at the worktop with non-caustic products, so a first-floor flat is not left smelling of anything. Everything is heat-tested and signed off before we go.

Is East Twickenham the same as St Margarets?
They run together and people use both names, partly because the station is called St Margarets. East Twickenham is the side meeting the Thames at Richmond Bridge, and it is TW1.

Can you get up to a second-floor flat?
Yes. Parts are carried down to the van and back up, so all we ask is somewhere to park within reach of the door.

Tell us when you book. It must be shut down and cold, which for most people means switching it off the evening before.
