The houses along Princess Margaret Road, the way into the old Bata village, are the newest houses in its conservation area: wide-fronted semis of the late 1950s and early 1960s in red and yellow brick, some still with glass bricks beside the front door.
Three decades of Bata houses
Thurrock Council's 2023 appraisal of the Bata Village conservation area splits the housing by date, and each phase looks different:
- 1930s flat roofs

- The Crescents

- Late 1950s to early 1960s, set well back behind wide front gardens.
The appraisal also notes that most houses now have replacement windows and that in The Crescents a number have been altered or extended. Kitchens in houses this old have usually been refitted at least once, so the cooker could be anything from a 60cm freestanding model to a built-in double in an extension.
A village of semis
In the census area round Princess Margaret Road, Bata Avenue and Gloucester Avenue (Thurrock 013B), 71.3% of the 914 households lived in a semi-detached house in 2021, against 34.5% across Thurrock. Two-thirds (65.6%) owned their home and 20.9% rented privately. With one household in five renting, tenancies change hands here too, and letting agents can have the invoice in the agency's name, photos for the checkout file, and keys picked up by arrangement for an empty house.

Parking on the Bata estate
No East Tilbury road appears on Thurrock Council's list of permit parking zones. The appraisal notes that the pavement on the east side of Princess Margaret Road is particularly wide to allow for the parking of cars, and that paving over front gardens for extra parking has altered the conservation area. If your drive has room for a van, say so when you book; otherwise check the signs and tell us where it can stop.

We live in a listed house on Bata Avenue. Does that change the job?
No. The oven is cleaned in place with nothing fixed or altered, dust sheets go down first, and the removable parts are soaked and cleaned separately.
How long does a double oven take?
About two hours, or about 90 minutes for a single. A 90cm range takes two to three hours.
