The Bata estate here is roughly 352 houses laid out as a garden village, and the oldest of them, on Bata Avenue, were set out in a staggered chequerboard pattern so that every house got a usable garden rather than the back yard a terrace would have given it. Numbers 2 to 34 Bata Avenue are listed Grade II.
A Czech company town on the Thames marshes
Tomas Bata founded the factory in 1932. Frantisek Lydie Gahura and Vladimir Karfik designed the buildings, and the estate went up in welded steel columns, roof trusses and reinforced concrete instead of the red brick the rest of Essex was using. Housing was built in stages between 1933 and the mid-1960s. The flat-roofed houses line Thomas Bata, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Coronation and Queen Mary Avenues; the pitched-roof ones on the Crescents came later, mostly after the war began. East Tilbury station opened in 1936 to serve the settlement and still runs c2c services to Fenchurch Street.
Listed outside, ordinary inside
Thurrock Council designated the conservation area in 1993, covering five parts of the settlement including the former factory complex. Controls of that kind govern a frontage, not a kitchen, and ninety years of owners and tenants have turned the fittings over many times, so a listed 1930s elevation tells you nothing about the cooker behind it. The factory closed in 2005. The 2021 census put the built-up area at 5,750 people.
The tank stays in the van
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van, which keeps the mess and the fumes off the estate's small kitchens. Indoors the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products, so there is no chemical smell afterwards. We heat-test the oven and sign it off before leaving. A single oven in a Bata Avenue house takes about ninety minutes. Fixed price, no premium-area surcharge.

They are separate places a few miles apart, both in RM18. Tell us the road name and we will get the right one.

No. The tank and the water are both in the van.
Can you do an oven for an end-of-tenancy check?
Yes. The door glass is split where the design allows, which is the part an inventory clerk looks at.
