East Smithfield today is mostly the name of a road: a quarter of a mile of the A1203 running east from Tower Hill until it turns into The Highway. Tower Hamlets' 2008 appraisal of the Tower conservation area calls it a major route out to the east of London, dominated by fast-moving traffic.
The postcodes behind this page belong to St Katharine's Way, on the western edge of St Katharine Docks, and the addresses there are offices, restaurants and a hotel. The homes are round the dock basins and along Thomas More Street, so that is what this page is about.
Flats round St Katharine Docks
About 1,250 houses were pulled down for Thomas Telford's docks, which opened on 25 October 1828. Shipping stopped at the end of the 1960s, and from the 1970s the docks were rebuilt as a mix of offices, shops, a marina and homes. The Ivory House, a 19th-century warehouse listed at Grade II in 1973, is the only historic warehouse left on the site, according to the council's 2008 appraisal, and it now holds flats. East of the docks the Greater London Council built the South Quay Estate, whose first residents moved in between 1979 and 1981: around 300 flats in plain brick blocks of four to eight storeys, set among mature trees. It began as social housing; in 2007 about 200 owners bought the freehold from the council. Sun Walk has blocks from the 1980s to the 2000s, and Matilda House, an older five-storey brick block, stands at the eastern edge of the conservation area.
Flats like these usually have fitted kitchens, which often means a built-in oven under the worktop or in a tall unit. The council's appraisal puts most dock buildings at five to eight storeys, so a lift may matter. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; in the flat, the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand, on dust sheets laid before anything comes apart.
Renting and owning by the docks
At the 2021 Census the small census area covering St Katharine Docks and Thomas More Street (Tower Hamlets 027B) had 1,003 households. 49.6% rented privately, 35.6% owned and 14.2% rented from the council or a housing association, and 83.8% lived in a purpose-built block of flats. With half the households renting privately, a tenancy checkout is a common reason for a clean.

What you pay depends on the appliance (a single, a double, a range cooker, a hob added on), and the price is agreed on the phone before the visit. A single takes about 90 minutes on site and a double about 2 hours.
Parking in zones C1 and C2
On the council's 2020 zone map the streets south of East Smithfield, round the docks (St Katharine's Way and Thomas More Street), are in zone C2. North of the road, around Royal Mint Street, is C1. Tower Hamlets' zone page gives both as Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, with one exception: the Trinity Square area of C2 is also controlled on Saturdays to 5.30pm and on Sundays from 8.30am to 2pm. The council adds that these restrictions apply to public roads only, with other restrictions on private land and council estates. Does a converted warehouse like the Ivory House change anything?
Not the method. Tell us the floor and whether there is a lift.
Can you come on a Sunday?
Yes. We work seven days a week and weekends cost the weekday price. Zones C1 and C2 are weekday zones apart from the Trinity Square area, so most public bays here are outside controlled hours on a Sunday.
Can the extractor hood be cleaned on the same visit?

Do I need to be in at the end of the visit?
Yes. The oven is rebuilt, heated and checked with you before we leave, so someone needs to be there to look at it with us.
